Is leashing a thing that should exist?

Since the two buffs can speed up initial clear times considerably, allowing the spamming of abilities or adding more damage to autoattacks, pretty much every jungler starts at either the Elder Lizard or Ancient Golem.

However, because of the buffs they possess, these monsters are tough to bring down, especially for a champion at level 1. So the jungler often has their team come and help to deal enough damage to the monster so the jungler doesn't risk the very real chance of dying on the first monster.

This has been considered as normal optimal play, especially since having teammates around can help against potential invades, but should a jungler require teammates just to have a chance at a decent jungle run? What if they only connect to the match several minutes in and their teammates are busy in their lanes? They can't rightly ask for help then, so they're stuck farming lesser monsters until they can do it on their own.

The only solution I had was along the lines of Smite dealing a ludicrous amount of damage at level 1, like a thousand or so (Smite's current damage is 390 at level 1 and each buff's health is 1500 at the start of the game, for reference). Rather than just changing the numbers and making it confusing for new players as to why Smite suddenly did 410 damage at level 2 when it did a 1000 at level 1, I think it might work if only the first smite of the match dealt the increased damage. The only risk I could see is if someone misclicked on one of the lizards accompanying the buff monster, making them waste the enhanced Smite, which wouldn't be bad in the current leashing system but would be horrible with this change.

Yeah, leashing should exist - it's a team game. It also adds a bit of variety to the jungle, opening up picks that might otherwise have a really rough start.

So the jungler often has their team come and help to deal enough damage to the monster so the jungler doesn't risk the very real chance of dying on the first monster.

Thats...not really the reason for a Leash. With the right runes and masteries you can solo buff monsters with champions like Sivir at level 1 with no leash at all. Any jungler worth using doesn't suffer a risk from dying to a sigil monster at level 1, and you can certainly test-play them in a custom game with nothing but unhelpful bots that don't give a leash.

The reason for a leash is more so you remain fairly healthy throughout the jungle run, which opens up chances to gank lanes and apply global pressure (which is otherwise suicidal if you're hanging in at 1/4 HP). It also prevents a 5v1 gank scenario from happening where the Jungle quickly becomes a non-factor for several minutes, giving global pressure to the enemy. Finally, helping with the leash serves the purpose of keeping the jungler healthy so counter-ganks are really risky against them. It's one thing to counter-gank an opposing jungler that's stuck at 1/3 health, it's another when they're sitting at close to ~75% ~80%. With the latter - you can blow your burst rotation and easily not kill them, giving them a solid chance to stall for time while the rest of their team collapses on you. If you leave a jungler with really low health though, they could just flat out get deleted in an invade.

Leashing is nothing like it used to be, riot kinda killed it, and as far as buffing smite . People would still leash so us just kill it that much faster. So yeah this change is lame.

Leashing also theoretically allows you to take down the first buff camp without using smite, leaving it as an option for clearing the other buff camp. Don't ruin the surprise for the junglers I've been playing with, though...

The jungle is already way too tame as is and just about every champion and their grandmother can do it and you want to make it easier? Jungling is supposed to be high risk/high reward, in my opinion.

A role in itself shouldn't be high risk/high reward. That term is meant for champions and their kits. I would accept if you said assassins as a whole should be high risk/high reward, but a class of champion isn't a lane position.

I don't know if I like it or not. Depends on the jungler. If the jungler is selfish and only asks for help for the persons benefit only then I'd say its stupid but if the jungler actually ganks and helps the majority of the time like they are suppose to then I'd have to reconsider. That aside. When I jungle as Udyr Udyr, I don't need a leash. I am able to do it alone so my teammates don't have to have the opposing champ get the majority of the farm needed to get more powerful. That is where the ganks come in. But that puts my previous statement to the test.
