Aatrox Mains Manifesto

Dear LoL Community,

We are the Aatrox mains and we would like to share our story. The rework was not for us “but for the community” – so we cannot find anything close to old Aatrox in the game anymore. Where upon getting nerfed, his play rate now is exactly the same as it was before. We wanted to see him changed, but never as much as he was. Riot themselves said he had a healthy winrate for all of his 5 years of prior existence.

An excerpt by Youmuus why he loved the champion when he actually tried him: "Not a particularly good Aatrox player but there was always an allure that made me want to sink time into learning him. His thematic of this drain tank warrior who fought till the end was such an amazing fantasy. There were moments where you would have extremely low hp and hit a critical mass of healing which kept you alive and played more and more risky in hopes of making of those sick plays over and over again. It sucks we can't do that anymore, I think the flat passive heal on current Aatrox is a huge injustice to his design and why a lot of people who were initially drawn to him left. Changing him from an auto attacker to an ad caster was just the nail in the coffin for me as it just seems like he is now a completely different champion now. Personally, and from the Rengar community we hope you guys get your revert as well."

“Witness Truth.” Words said by an ancient and mysterious figure, only associated as being war itself. Ancient by that massive wisdom, experienced. A god. Why? A legendary warrior who would appear in only the largest of battles, in the direst of situations. Emotionless in the middle of all the chaos around him and that's what his voice lines expressed: an inhuman, cold, mental state towards war meanwhile he talks about rage, when he feels none. From then on, he would either be remembered as a saviour or as the darkest and most horrific thing you could imagine. A mesmerising figure in combat, so graceful in combat that made him perfect, something beyond men.His animations were the perfect mixture between brutality and elegance. Two different poles. An artist and a killer machine. No hesitation.

As a creature that appeared to be war itself in the grand scheme of history, he wasn’t really interested in what went around the world, but merely spreading war itself as a means to prove his point that strife is a core part in every living being. Everyone wants war. His look really represented it as well – his wings being torn from the many battles and him having his armour be a part of his physiology, such as growing out of his legs. We also cannot forget his sword – a jagged living weapon that not only slashes, but also eats the very essence of his enemies.

His story was and still is part of Summoners Rift itself, as the two teams are modelled after the first war that has a record of his appearance. The blue team represents the Protectorate who he saved, red team is the Magelords who he killed. On a rock by the outer top red tower he still stands depicted. A silhouette of him, not the sword, for that was put there even before his lore was re-written.

He had perfect abilities to showcase his lore – Dark Flight to jump into the enemy team, followed by Massacre and then even when you die, you resurrect to turn the tide of battle. His abilities perfectly represented his war as he never led through words, but through action.

He was a champion about thrills like no other, because everything he did revolved him dancing near death. He had a trade-off between health and damage. The feeling of stance-dancing, managing your passive and being rewarded when you did everything right. Knowing when to switch from extra damage, to healing stances, flash Q engaging and ulting to get all your stacks of passive and then have a major attack steroid so you could slice anyone down in your vicinity. Orbwalking while you had extended range, with positioning well and making sure you can stick to high-priority targets and sustaining through it all through a visceral offensive onslaught. Being rewarded for being aggressive and offensive by sustaining and staying alive. That was an intoxicating playstyle. Originally Aatrox was also very versatile: in games he could be seen going full ad, a normal bruiser builds or even full ap. Throughout the years and even without the changes in a meta, you could go all kinds of things as your build. Or you could go one step beyond and take the route of Darien - get a Manamune.

Aatrox had 2 skillshots (3 if you count the ult) a toggle which defined how he managed situations and a resource bar which was essentially a gate to his stats, which is also outplayable. He had a slow dash to catch up to someone and for many years it was considered too slow for him to ever be good, same going for his E. His life-stealing had a balance aspect to it because it took a lot of time to fully heal from minions, and if you wanted to life-steal you had to AA minions (or champions). That meant you needed to put yourself in danger and risk yourself dying to AA minions if you were low hp or half. You needed to think if you wanted to lose on damage and heal or stack passive and deal damage.

His mini rework did alter his playstyle but it kind of left him who he was, something that we did not see with the major rework. Our champion was completely changed. That did not happen as during some point they decided they wanted to keep nothing of old Aatrox and wanted to just completely change him. The current version of Aatrox still feels unfinished, some animation transitions aren't smooth at all, the wings constantly get bugged, they removed his E charge system, something that makes him feel even less smooth. You can see how good he is for balance from the 6 months of just nerfs.

We still don't understand why they would make the rework for everyone except for the core fanbase, this feels really, really disappointing to the players who spent time and effort with him, this stings even more after looking at the reworks that came after Aatrox, loyal and they kept the core champion in them, especially Kayle and Warwick. He used to be a god, a true otherworldly warrior. We loved him as a whole package – the story, the looks, the gameplay and his voice. And now Mordekaiser, Riot contacted one of the most prominent Mordekaiser mains to make sure the future rework was in the right track. A rework should be loyal to a champion, modernize them, give them more tools, make them easier to balance, which is exactly what happened with Warwick, Kayle and Nunu. Even the experimental change that Riot showed with the new healing based ultimate is that this champion should not be named Aatrox as even the last connecting straw to who he was is disappearing because they cannot balance the rework. Last but not least – Bbtrox has interesting ideas. His current dominance in pro-play has left him where he is currently and he needs more work to make them efficient and healthy for the game in all levels of play. This rework accomplished none of its goals and took every step away from the original playerbase, it was handled poorly. He needs to be a different champion, so that the new mains do not have to go through the same as us.

Thanks to everyone who participated in this post, props to over 150 people that expressed their opinions on our reddit and discord.

There are also many more heartfelt opinions over at the AatroxMains subreddit, although I'm not certain if I'm allowed to link to it.

Thanks for hearing us.

Jesus christ, even if this doesn't get addressed, props to you (im guessing you got everyone together to say their piece, feel free to correct me) for putting in that much work just for this one post.

I too am a former Aatrox main (who has played the new one gritting my teeth every time a situation I could have mechanically gotten out of ends up taking a 180), and I honestly don't understand even now why they completely changed his kit because "it was too similar" to Tryndamere's (they didn't say it was him but honestly everyone has put two and two together and figured that out)? Like modernizing it could make certain things act differently and easily avoid such a massive amount of work just to create a kit many have sounded functions exactly like Riven's. Like i'm glad they did work on him, but it honestly shouldn't have never gone in this direction as it did.

Modernizing it would also get people interested in playing him even though it would be very similar to the old kit, and that was their goal with the rework: Get more people to play this champion. My biggest gripe is the fact he can't do what he was set out to do when they reworked him, and I quote this from the reveal page (the point will be bolded): "Umbral Dash’s passive turns bloody teamfights into fonts of health, keeping Aatrox alive for as long as his carnage continues. Allies who shield and sustain him for more swings of The Darkin Blade will be rewarded with a frontline juggernaut who can take as much damage as he deals."

He can't take as much damage as he deals, with shields or not. Its due to the fact he's pigonholed into building full AD just to do damage. I don't get why they couldn't partially revert the rework on the PBE and test a new kit that has both old and new incorporated into it (even the new R change). He's the one champion besides Yorick (still has ghouls, but functions very differently) to lose a lot of the old kit. I don't really get it regardless if it was for him to be open to more people, the champ will find its own designated playerbase at some point. I could honestly say the playerbase that is still playing him completely echoes old Aatrox. (feel free to add this in if you want)

I personally was by no means an Aatrox main before his rework, but when it was announced and his new thematic was teased I knew something beautiful was going to be destroyed. I always liked the idea behind him and the voice lines for him were always some of the best in the game, I just never decided to learn how to play him properly. That is until the announced rework.

I played him nonstop and learned how to play him (at my low elo, and from a more casual standpoint) in the jungle. It was heaven; the playstyle, immersing myself into the position of a war god honed by wisdom, and as you put it "dancing near death." I regretted not playing him sooner than I started.

I still remember the last day before his rework. I got on to play with some of my friends, and by this time the new abilities had already been revealed officially by Riot. They asked me what the new Aatrox was like and I told them that he wasn't going to be Aatrox anymore, he was going to be this thing that Riot removed in favor of. For the next few days I started calling the rework "Atrox."

I know it's a meme, and I know it can't properly express the dissatisfaction of the Aatrox community, but this sums up what happened the following day perfectly: https://pics.me.me/thumb_look-how-they-massacred-my-boy-when-you-get-to-43051752.png

Riot has shown that they'll revert champions (Rengar). I just hope they do it again for Aatrox.

I loved Aatrox, and I love Bbtrox frankly. I love the champion.

In his current iteration though, he's fucking terribly to play as. Slow. Unresponsive. Terrible at everything he's supposed to be good at. His identity is a shitty Riven clone, and his entire kit revolves around his Q which (See points 1 and 2) is awful. His ult does nothing but make people back off until it's over, or delay the inevitable. The only reason this rework ever was OP was because his AD stat was simply too high when it launched. Without that massive damage and healing, he's nothing. He can't dive. He can't stick to a target. He can't duel. He's not a Fighter. He doesn't sustain. What's he good for? Where is the fun?

I remember back when reworked Aatrox dropped to live, I made a thread who said, in short, that I hoped Riot releases a new champion that would take the place of the rework we all waited for with Aatrox. The whole thing got downvoted to hell and comments about "unbalanceable concept" and "blank champion without personality and interest" just popped. I always kept making threads, comments etc here to express how the new reworked Aatrox was too far from the ancient one, yet there were always other comments about the same kind of unjustified hate against him.

From this, I came to the conclusion that a fair amount of people from the community hated the old Aatrox simply for existing, calling him "unbalanced" while either having a negative or perfectly balanced winrate for about 90% of his lifetime, calling him "bland" while having one of the most epic lore and personality in the game, calling him "without identity" while being one of the most unique champions of the whole game at the time, calling him "an unwanted champion in the game" while, ironically, he caused the biggest vocal repercussions that a champion ever got from its mains twice, at his mini and his full rework.

To those who, just like I mentionned, hated the old Aatrox for whatever reason: he was supposed to be reworked for us, not for you, but it failed. Now, we want justice and we deserve it, your unjustified rage shouldn't keep the part of the community that we are from obtaining something that we are long due for. We miss our champion and we have plenty of reasons for doing so.

Edit: yet again, as we can see from all the downvotes on this thread and any single comment defending it, there is still people who can't get over the fact that people loved the old Aatrox. You can't oppose people simply because they liked a champ, no matter how you hated it even though you probably never bothered playing him, and you can't simply say "Aatrox's rework shouldn't get some special consideration" since it wasn't even a rework at this point.

Praise to you sir for putting my feelings into words. They didn't rework Aatrox for the people who played him they reworked him for the masses and then they gutted him just like they did when they initially released him so literally nothing as changed. They made him really good and because he abused a 2 item build (because the items are broken not him) and it got pro play they made sure it was nothing like the old Aatrox.

I play Mid lane mages now but I used to be a top lane split push main and Aatrox was by far my biggest champ. Even still when I play clash or against organized teams they still ban my Aatrox even tho I don't play him at all anymore just because of how many mastery points I have in him compared to any other champion. But they don't know that maybe 1% of that is on the new Aatrox and the other 99% on the old.

Just like the Kog'Maw Rework and the Leblanc rework, give us our champion back please, if you argument is that he was a stat stick he is even more that way now than he used to be and his kit almost entirely revolves around one easily dodge-able ability that has no reward for mastery like Riven's Q where you can shorten the animations. On top of that you gave him a dick hair of a dash that is meant only to re position for the Q. it's an ugly and cluncky champ and we want our old boy back plz.

He was also a mindless Xin Clone. I played a bunch of Old Aatrox and I've enjoyed New Aatrox SO much more than I ever enjoyed the old one.

Can I contribute to this manifesto? How can I?

There is literally music I can't listen to anymore because it reminds me too much of Aatrox. I want that feeling back.

Yeah I got aatrox to m7 before the rework and now i barely touch him

R107 Games3/21/2019, 11:30:46 PM10 votes

Riot found old aatrox to be a stat check and unhealthy being a drain tank, so that's why they reworked him completely.

At this point, you're just defining what you personally think a rework is. A rework is Riot altering a champion's kit as they see fit to make them supposedly healthier for the game. Riot can chose to completely modernize or preserve a champion's kit, either decision is still a rework.

It's like you're surprised this rework completely changed Aatrox, when it is shown Riot is capable of doing complete reworks in the past: Sion Yorick Galio Urgot Taric Poppy Swain

Why the hell is Aatrox an exception???

giannishannibal3/21/2019, 9:35:15 PM10 votes

Well AD-trox feels too clunky and slow in my eyes but its a still a solid champion. AD-trox is ok-ish but he is not Aatrox, he is now a corrupted god that was sealed cause he wanted to destroy the whole word ( like how much of a cliche main evil chacacter can it get right?). The old one more like he heart was beating for wars and battles, he felt alive amist a field of death and blood. His target is to keep moving and slash his sword one more time again and again. I am not aatrox main- i have played the old one 40 times and the new one 20 times and i wasnt good at either of them. But at least i was more fascinated at the 'Keep fighting as long my heart is beating' mentality he had. New AD-trox is a seperate excistance in my eyes and a champion itself is ok. Thats my opinion. Now i dont think RIot will revert him or at least smooth him as the old one was but good luck trying to revert him.

What they did to this champ and his mains was wrong

Vectros3/22/2019, 6:32:06 AM8 votes

Not an Aattrox main, but I tried him every now and then...and then really fell in love with him a few months before the rework. Made me super sad, I was starting to get good with him. New kit sounded cool, but miss the old one so much...and the new one doesn't accomplish any of the original goals that I can think of.

I always kinda liked playing aatrox pre-rework. It was a shame to see him go.

I miss old Aatrox, it actually saddens me that he's s gone forever. I was a big fan of Boxerpete when he was active and I started playing Aatrox more when Pete did. He was taken away from me right when I started getting decent with him. I feel like most the reworks they have done have been great, Aatrox is the exception though. I hate his kit. It's a unique kit and playstyle and I respect that, and I don't want it deleted. Just give him a different name, character model and lore and bring back the original Aatrox.

Jaspers3/22/2019, 11:43:07 AM6 votes

In that WIRED video where they describe champions they said: "I love his update, I think we went too far away from the original gameplay that people liked about Aatrox. We diverged away from it too far there."

They admit they didn't get it right for the people that liked him, even if the update was good and it may have attracted more people to the champ. But I'm not sure they'd do anything about it. It's too late now. I can't see them going back, adding attack speed and adding an actual management of a resource bar like before.

Top lane Lethal Tempo on old Aatrox was great fun, I miss that.

Monlyth3/22/2019, 2:19:02 AM6 votes

I tried playing Aatrox once in his current state. Once was enough. He's hot garbage now, both in terms of design and power level. I think it's safe to say that this rework was a failure. You've got my vote for a revert.

gileskd3/22/2019, 5:44:03 AM6 votes

as a ex galio and ex taric main, I feel your pain

Quepha3/22/2019, 7:48:54 AM6 votes

I barely touched old Aatrox and really hated his design, but it's obvious Riot didn't even try to give a shit about the people who liked him with the rework.

T Captain T3/22/2019, 3:36:21 AM5 votes

It's just not fair for the people who main him. Just like you stated, a rework should stay true to the champion. Warwick and Kayle were good examples. I felt like Aatrox just needed a mini rework to his kit. Similar to Caitlyn, Katarina, Vladimir, Zyra, Xin etc. He should've never been a combo focused character. There's already Riven. Just like all the other AA focused fighters, Aatrox was different. Trynd is a splitpush focused champ, Yi is a melee hypercarry, and Aatrox was a ranged-sustain fighter. It would be nice if he got the Leblanc treatment but I don't think they'll revert him.

qss03/22/2019, 4:50:07 PM4 votes

This rework is lazy and generic. Even his old appearance was much better. Im sorry for you Aatrox mains.
