Why do you say "It's only ARAM?"

I would like to open a civil, logical discussion on this saying. I'm curious about a few aspects about it. First of all if you say it, do you legitimately feel that one gameplay mode excuses behaviors or even means you should put less effort into the game? Why do you feel that way? Can you explain it?

I was thinking also about a time I visited Italy and I was pretty put off specifically at one thing: line ups. Did you know that it is culturally accepted in Italy to just butt ahead in line ups? You have to extend your elbows out and jostle your way, "fight" for your space to get to whatever you are waiting for. (I'm Canadian but I've also lived in the US, and I can say that the moment someone ever tried to butt ahead in any lineup that person would absolutely had a talking to by several people.)

It dawned in me that this behavior started somewhere and enough people just accepted it for it to become a cultural norm. Not enough people spoke up about it.

It seems that some etiquette in ARAM is similar now. We are meant to just stuff off your 1 min afk at the start of the game(even though, arguably that 1st min can actually set the tone for the entire game), or that you behave like a "ping general" pinging players trollingly all game, or that you deliberately take health for just you even at 100% life with 3 team mates at 40% life, or just not even put out 50% effort in the game, or if you link players gear or skills (even if that player is doing statistically the best of all 10 players) that's acceptable, or the miriad of other player behaviors. All actions justified or sluffed off as "LOL it's just ARAM!"

I would love to see some insight into this justification.

There are people who want to justify their laziness. That's it.

If you don't want to try in a game, then don't bother playing it. You're ruining it for everyone else.

There is a pretty good chance in ARAM (and ARURF for that matter) that people are playing champs that they aren't that familiar with. IMO it just isn't worth getting too bent out of shape when someone is playing poorly. Not to say I never get annoyed or angry but I try to brush it off. Raging in ARAM where there really isn't anything at stake just doesn't seem that useful.

it disgusts me when these lazy players come up with an excuse for every game mode tbh

"its just norm" "its just aram" "idc if i lose on my smurf" (in ranked)

Here's a list of things I've seen in most often in aram, and my opinion on them:

People afk'ing at the start of the game ---I. Hate. This. Unless you have a big problem that needs to be dealt with, please do not do it. It can actually ruin the entire game for your team because you forced your team into a 4v5 for no reason. Also, go to the bathroom before queuing up. You'd be surprised how quickly a game can start even when you've been on a "5 minute vs screen" streak.

"It's only aram." ---That is not an excuse. Don't use it. If you don't know what to build on champs, or what is the best order, don't wing it and go "well it's only aram" when someone questions your build. ----Same applies if someone suggests to stop going head first into the enemy team when your team can't follow up. Just because it's aram doesn't mean you can do whatever.

"I'm going to go ad/ap on (insert champ with no ap/ad scaling)" they say, as they get in game. ---Please make this known before getting into game, otherwise you're literally just trolling. If a champ has no ad/ap scaling, building those items on them doesn't work. At all. Ever. All you'll be doing is tiny, non-noticeable drops of damage and you will ruin the entire game for your team. I've seen this so many times, with only a few times where the person said "well i didn't know." If you seriously have no idea about a champs scaling, ask before getting into the game. Surprisingly, there's a lot of helpful players who play aram.

"I can't be punished. It's aram." ---And I have screenshots to prove otherwise. Just because you see others doing it and "getting away with it", doesn't mean they are or that it's not reportable. Aram is not a game mode that's safe from the rules. If you break them, you will be punished.

"The game is over, ff." They say at first blood. ---I see this more in aram then anything else. Please do not assume that first blood in aram means the game is 100% over. You'd be surprised how you can turn an aram around, even with a bad team.

People leaving because they think the game is over. --- If people are literally spawning, do not assume the game is over just because the enemy team is at the nexus. I had a game where someone left because they thought the game was over when the enemy was at our nexus... even though 3 of us respawned and stopped them. If the nexus hasn't exploded, the game isn't over.

Pinging someone when the game just started or they've just respawned. ---If the game has only just started, doesn't mean everyone is in. Yes, some people will take an extra few seconds to actually load into the game. Mass pinging them just because you're already at the bushes wont get them to magically teleport to you. ----Same if they literally just respawned. Give them a second to actually start moving, or to buy an item they got the gold for as they respawned. Mass pinging doesn't give someone a magical teleport button. In fact, you're more likely to piss them off and make them sit there for longer or straight up afk just to piss you off. Don't do it.

"I can't ruin the enemy teams fun if I'm giving them free kills." ---Yes... someone actually said that once... in a game where the enemy team actually asked them to stop because they weren't having fun just sitting there because the rest of our team couldn't do anything. Take your enemies feelings into consideration. Surprise, some actually would prefer a fun 5v5 and not a 4v6.

"Stop talking to the enemy team." ---Aram is a fun game mode. Sometimes both teams have literal conversations. We do it because we can, and because we want to. Most often I see this done when someone on each team is dead. Heck, I once had a convo with an enemy when we both have 30+ second death timers because we were killing time while our teammates were fighting.

"Why did you execute yourself?"/"Stop executing yourself idiot." ---Why is it such a problem? If the enemy team is dead, I have a big bounty, and I'm able to execute myself, then why can't I do that to buy items and avoid giving the enemy team the bounty? Unless the person keeps trying to do/keeps doing it when the entire enemy team is up, there isn't usually any harm in it.

And my personal favorite, when I'm on my main champs:

"Why the fuck are we losing with the M7 Janna/Soraka/Sona on our team?" ---Because I can't save everyone, or you're doing the same thing as those on SR do: Running in when I'm not there. Just because someone got their main doesn't mean they can single-handedly carry 4 other people to victory.

What I do in these situations: Most commonly I report the person, depending on how they react/what they do. If they're doing something reportable, sorry, I'm not letting you get out of this match for free without a tick on your account. If they're not doing anything reportable, which isn't often, I just ignore them as best I can since there's nothing I can do.

Sadly, a lot of people have the "it's aram nothing can happen" attitude either because they keep getting away with what they're doing, they're following others thinking they won't get away with it, or they just don't care. Not much you can do about them really.

ArtumisPrime4/22/2019, 3:31:42 PM5 votes

Because it's not ranked.

I'm not going to be one of those assholes who trolls or AFKs. I'll also do my best in game outside of dicking around occasionally (not ending when it might be a good idea, spamming taunt/laugh/w.e to the point it gets me killed, etc.)

However, it is not a competitive game mode, it is for-fun. Doing something stupid and dicking around isn't something that I would ever do in ranked because I'd feel obligated to take it more seriously. As such, it's only ARAM, not ranked.

GodlyBane4/22/2019, 2:59:19 AM5 votes

Because. Its only aram. And its only norms

roughvan4/21/2019, 4:29:09 PM4 votes

Its not only aram but normals or any mode that isn't ranked. There are often 3 types of people:

1.The ones that will use excuses as "it is only aram" but it is a question if they could actually play any better.

2.People who only play for rewards/missions or daily win as they don't have time to play a summoner's rift that day maybe.

3.People who want to relax after ranked game.

Lets be honest aram or twisted treeline don't get any significant updates. Most of the playerbase just plays summoner's rift for this reason. Few seasons ago i really enjoyed playing twisted treeline but the map/champions just feel so limited.

I mean i do say "its only normals" when my teammates want me to put 100% effort into the game when we are behind/losing and have a chance of coming back.I will still play up to standard, but maybe im learning a new champion or i just wanted to relax after a ranked game that i lost, i may not feel up to putting 100% into a normal game.

Most of bronze players never put that much effort into the game, why should you feel pressured in a normal or aram game? I understand that other players may try to win, if they have first win of the day or just don't like losing but its to be expected to find people trying out champions in normals and aram for the first time quite often.

Naymliss4/22/2019, 12:43:14 AM4 votes

Because if you're getting worked up and flaming someone over a casual game mode, I will point out that it's a casual game mode with nothing on the line.

Greenette4/22/2019, 4:11:42 AM4 votes

I never say this, cuz I play a lot of ARAM and try to win every game I play.

Also, a lot of people defending that stance of " lol its just ARAM, relax" are super entitled lol. To them, its just a casual game mode where its fine to ruin the game by going AP Trundle or other shit that doesn't work. Its fine because they think ARAM is for funzies and discount the opinions of others who want their allies to put their best foot forward and try to win.

And they're more vocal than ARAM players who want a good experience, because those ARAM players get harassed for voicing their opinions.

Theres nothing wrong with fun builds in ARAM If you know what you're doing with th3 champ. A person with 0 mastery going AP Zac is just a melee minion with a Ludens proc, vs someone with 50k+ who knows how to play the champ and what their capabilities are.

So yeah, I enjoy ARAM and playing it competitively. Its heaven when you get into the same queue pool as 20-50 other serious ARAM players and just take turns swapping team mates. Those are the best games.

Schoenberg4/21/2019, 7:39:18 PM3 votes

Because it is just ARAM. It's a non-competitive environment (for the most part...) just like normals. It's not meant to be taken very seriously, although there are individuals who play it a lot who do play it in that way. It's more on the laid back side (as far as pvp goes...)

And having said that, it doesn't excuse afking at the start of the game. If you have to afk, go empty your bladder/grab a drink/change your diaper before you start the game. You're wasting other folks' time.

The only way I could see this getting a fix is if they were to add an ARAM ranked, but then there'd be a lot more of what we see in the serious environment of ranked... But regardless, it'd be better for what you want.

Kazekiba4/21/2019, 5:57:19 PM3 votes

Because ARAM takes the majority of strategy out of League, and thus requires a bare minimum threshold of skill. And also because youre not likely on a champion youre good at, and thus cannot and should not be expected to play well.

Noblewind4/22/2019, 4:03:14 PM2 votes

I played ARAM recently for the missions, usually only play SR ranked. I get that some people might play ARAM seriously, but I don't think it can be denied that it is a more casual game mode. While I didn't say 'it's only ARAM' in chat I definitely felt like saying it whenever a teammate of mine went a little overboard with blaming the team for losing.

Personally I was trying each game but couldn't have cared less if I ended up losing,. It felt like it was just for fun, so yeah in that sense it was 'only ARAM'

Skorch4/23/2019, 12:56:18 AM2 votes

I said this the other day.

I almost always say it to some dude who is just being a major ass to his team (i have done it to someone on the other team before)

Its less of an excuse and more of a way to discredit someone who thinks he needs to stomp to have fun and ruin everyone elses mood. It doesnt mean that we arent trying, moreso that there isnt much of a reason to be upset at your teammates because the result of the game hardly matters, and team balancing is weirder in non-rank modes anyway. (why flame the bronze you got placed with as diamond? you got placed there of course they will be worse)

Ratpie4/21/2019, 8:35:47 PM2 votes

It goes hand in hand with calling people tryhards. The point have the game is to have fun, and do your best to win. If you don't care about winning, then you don't care about the premise of the game. The goal is to win. You won't win all, but you should always try your best. Why is it bad at all if someone tries hard to win?

EddyBearLOVE4/22/2019, 4:22:16 PM1 votes

If ARAM ranked mode was a thing, would there be more ARAM Players or Summoner's Rift Players? Personally, I'd play more LoL than Dota2, if that was a thing.

DeadUnborn4/22/2019, 4:45:15 PM1 votes

only commenting on the hard trying aspect. Yes, you should put less effort and just try to have fun with the game since the Random part of character select means many times teams will be unbalanced and realistically unwinnable, meaning you should only try to have fun with it

Kenneky4/21/2019, 7:02:31 PM1 votes

I'm sorry that I'm not able to play all champions. Why can't people understand that people can't play all champions, It's not "less effort", but I guess doing bad with a champion I play for the very first time is "lazy" sorry it's my fault. If you get that low to flame people for going bad on a 1st time champ, you are part of the problem. I go to ARAM to relax, not to get flamed at again. Trolls and AFKs are problem anywhere, the only thing you can do is report them after the game ended.

People should not take ARAM that seriously, when I go in a ARAM game, I do not expect people to play good.
