Lower the Cost of Runes and Rune Pages

Devourer·2/8/2015, 3:33:07 AM·97 votes·4,190 views

I always thought that runes and rune pages cost a lot but damn, I just spent 10,000 IP on one rune page and a lifesteal quint. Seriously no rune should cost 2000 IP and the cost of a rune page should not equal the cost of a new champion. Having the prices this high will shove new players away from the game and takes many many days to get even close to the amount of runes you need. Let alone having to buy champions as you get runes, new players are way behind and will take many days just to get even close to what you need to play at everyone else's level.

I thoroughly agree! It is just absolutely absurd how expensive these runes are. And the rune pages? Fuck them. So I either have the choice to pay real money or spend up to a week and a half just grinding ip (I'm not the kind of person that plays 10+ games a day, I rarely have the time to do more than 4) in order to have more stat variety to be competitive?

That's not to mention how damn expensive some of these champions are. It's like this game says "fuck you" to newer players just because we haven't been playing as much or because we can't afford to pay real money for what we want. So I have the option of having a decent champ pool, but having a crappy rune selection and be behind in stats I need or a decent rune selection but be limited to a crappy champ pool which opens me to being easily counter-picked?

I love this game, for many reasons it is one of my favorite games ever. But this economy system is just an absolute joke for those of us who haven't been playing for a few years at least or can't afford to throw in real cash (I would love to support this game monetarily, I love it that much, but I just have so many more expenses I need to prioritize that I just can't)

And this, ladies and gents, is why I have so little of my champion roster unlocked.

Yeah...i always felt that buying runes is a chore, i know this might sound counter-productive, but why not just make runes like masteries? having unlimited pages and all the resources unlocked through the leveling experience. i know it would be X less $$ in Ritos huge wallet but it is annoyingly painfull to have to grind 60+ games just to get 3 quints. At least lower the cost of runes to 50-100 IP each and quints up to 200IP. make rune pages for around 3150 and the RP Price a bit discounted. But that's just my 2 cents on it. hopefully this gets redposted sometime.item 3070 item 3070

I just gave up on runes and shit altogether and just try and win with mechanic than with ball of stats. Sometime it works, sometime it doesnt. Welp thats the price you pay for being poor

Kai is cute2/8/2015, 8:37:49 AM5 votes

Bump yeah its pretty stupid how I have to play like 50 games for three quints

Asdeft2/8/2015, 9:07:55 AM4 votes

Pls. The cost of runes is crazy and rune pages in specific are way too much.

Aboylova922/8/2015, 5:09:30 PM4 votes

You are correct about pushing new players away. I almost stopped playing after I saw how important runes/pages were, but how expensive they are. If it wasn't for my friends, I for sure would have stopped playing, which doesn't bode well for the random Joe Schmoe they're trying to get from say an advertisement.

Dark ChokoCookie2/9/2015, 3:54:49 PM3 votes

Runes should be treated like masteries in my opinion because atm they are the only thing you could consider p2w in this game.

(ofc you get them for ip but if you spent all ip on runes you will never be able to buy champs)

Infiny Mage2/8/2015, 6:38:39 PM3 votes

As someone who's got 11 rune pages and the whole roster unlocked I say No. New players and even veteran one's can and should have to grind to earn the runes/rune pages/champions. A little more experience with champions never hurt anyone. Or give in to temptation and just buy RP points. How do think Rito makes their money?

Mandaari2/8/2015, 11:40:19 PM3 votes

My smurf just hit 20 last weekend. I saved all of my IP from 1-20 with the exception of 2 450 champions. By the time I hit 20 I had enough for 1 page's worth of runes.

Runes need to:

  1. Cost less

  2. Not have tiers/be directly upgradable.

Playing against someone who's 20+ as a 19- is incredibly frustrating.

I don't mind the runes where they are at in price because you can buy them one at a time and slowly build up the stats you want, but an additional rune page costing 6300 IP is ridiculous. I'd settle for 2000 IP for an additional rune page.

Please Riot, if you truly want diversity to be achievable in League of Legends, lowering the IP cost of additional rune pages is one of the best ways. I can play most champions in my champion pool of 40 champions pretty well. Roughly 30 of them. But because of my 2 rune pages I'm limited to roughly 20 of them, without room for variety in different roles or builds for each individual champion. Then because of the meta I'm limited again and let's say I have 10 champions that work in the meta, but actually only 8 work on my 2 rune pages. More than one third of the champions I can play well are simply out of the picture (not including the ones I don't own yet). I don't mind the meta changing at all, but it's not even worth it for me to try and challenge the meta in draft, and I also miss many opportunities to counterpick, simply because I'm so severely limited by having only 2 rune pages.

I bought a 3rd rune page recently, and damn does it feel amazing to be able to play MAGE ADC and TANK. But it doesn't feel amazing when I remember how much time it took to grind 6300 IP just so I can play a few more of the champions I own. Next up, when grinding for my next 6300 IP do I spend it on a champion that I'm good at playing that also works with my runes and works in the meta, or do I get another rune page so I have access to that one weirdly-runed champion I'm also good at playing? Once I bought a new champion that works with my runes, then I got totally shafted when the meta changed. R.I.P. Talon.

Uiru2/9/2015, 1:14:08 AM2 votes

I have most of the runes and pages I need and I fully support this.

Either prices need to come down across the board or at least one generic runepage needs to be given for free. (ie. armor yellows, mr blues, ad reds and ap quints. Might not be 100% perfect for everybody but it would be a start.) The cost of champions is ridiculous enough. ~Uiru

King Odin2/9/2015, 12:10:04 AM2 votes

I sort of disagree since at some point you will have 100K IP and nothing to do with it. I find it gives initiative to play and save up. Also it's a lot more useful than a champion if you think about it since it can apply to any number of champions.

Shouju2/9/2015, 8:10:02 AM2 votes

Honestly, I did a lot of grinding for runes, saving up about 50K IP in total for a rune sale, and that was just casual play, and making sure I got my daily wins. I've got plenty of runes, champions, and pages. While before I started saving I thought it would take forever, I honestly don't feel that people should get them for doing nothing. The rune system - while it can be annoying - rewards players for taking the time to learn the game, and learn what they can apply to certain champions. Whether it be for an early game advantage or making an easier build path for lategame, your runes make a difference. And you can apply one page to a lot of champions.

What I would like to see is an extra rune page or a few free runes as a reward for hitting level 30, or something. Just to get people over that initial point where they are exhausted about the idea. A third one would allow for the two most common pages: AD, Armor, MR, AS ; and AP, Magic Pen, Armor, MR. As well as one extra page for a different role, or a niche page. And it's not as if you need every rune to have a good page, there are runes that are obviously more efficient than others.

CheckMyDoubles2/9/2015, 5:27:08 AM1 votes

Good thing you can buy rune pages for only 590 RP.

Time is money. You either spend one or the other. It's a completely free game and you can get everything with the exception of vanity items for only the cost of time. If you don't like that you can spend money and get everything instead. Seems fair to me.

junglerboy162/9/2015, 5:17:36 PM1 votes

No kidding about shoving new players away. I have been playing over a year, but since I can't devote endless time to grinding (I actually have a life that I have to take care of too), I have 2 rune pages, and half a set of runes. It is really the least fun part of the game to be honest, Runes are a NECESSITY to succeed (especially in the jungle), and having to spend endless hours playing just so that I can have a good basic setup is just stupid. Riot should give every player a full set of runes at least, and then have unique runes be available for purchase, I.E. Riot gives everyone 9 armor seals, 9 MR glyphs, 9 AS marks, and 3 MS quints, a nice simple multifunctional set that can be used in several roles until you need to make a specialized page for your full AD champ or your AP assassin or what have you. Just having SOMETHING to use before you customize everything would make this game much more appealing to casual players who don't have the time to play several matches a week.

Serage2/8/2015, 5:22:40 PM1 votes

i have 35.000 ip and dont know what to buy... give us more things to buy :D more rune pages would be great! I need 8 alone for akali!

Meep Man2/8/2015, 5:56:30 PM1 votes

I think half the cost of current Tier 3 Runes, but keep the pages the same.

Xela Syab2/8/2015, 6:27:56 PM1 votes

I think some runes need to be buffed, I'm still using the same runes from 2 years back.

SpecterVonBaren2/8/2015, 6:46:54 PM1 votes

At the least they should reduce the price of Rune pages. I don't mind having to grind out IP for runes but having to grind out so much IP for a rune page and then having it just sit there being useless until you ALSO grind out a bunch of IP for runes to put in it is a chore.

Orders2/8/2015, 7:06:29 PM1 votes

I think I have spent over half of my total IP that I have ever earned on runes.

I personally think they need a price reduction too. :\

the Anarchit3cht2/8/2015, 7:27:56 PM1 votes

If they do a price reduction that's going to mean a lot of complicated math to refund people for all the runes they've bought thus far.

Truly Prideful2/8/2015, 7:27:57 PM1 votes

I agree completely. For how critical runes are to the game, they are way too expensive. Riot gives you a poor choice to make, buy runes and pages to be more competitive or buy champions so your pool doesn't suck? The only way the prices are 'reasonable' is if you're someone that plays 12 hours a day.

Pikmints2/8/2015, 7:39:33 PM1 votes

I agree that the prices are annoyingly high. I value buying a champ above them because I feel like I'm more likely to trade someone a 6300 champ that I'm going to buy, rather than use that 7th rune page. I only ever buy runes/pages when they're on sale any more for that exact reason.

Also, at least I get some sense of completion when I get closer to owning all of the champions. When I own all of them, I'll be able to trade with anyone and practice anyone. With runes, there's a limit of how many runes per account you can own, so you can't even get 9 of every rune on your account. Even if you could, the benefits of it are much smaller with each purchase and less immediate.

LanceTrace2/8/2015, 9:13:06 PM1 votes

I played since start of season 3, and only have 3 rune pages with just the primary runes. I bought some champs with RP too and currently only have 80ish champs.. I can't imagine how new players with limited game time can afford to be on equal terms for competitive (ranked) games.

willcarry4gold2/8/2015, 10:40:41 PM1 votes

I could probably buy a 6300 or 4800 champ with the cost of one page of tier 3 runes (the cost of the page not included)

Aheadatime2/8/2015, 10:58:29 PM1 votes

While I agree completely, it's just never going to happen. Riot has been steadily increasing iP price points on champions for over a year now, and has dramatically increased the amount of time it takes before champs lower their price point over time. These are long-term financial strategies that provide incentive to buy iP boosts, champs, and rune pages with RP.

I wouldn't doubt that from Riot's perspective, if we were all able to get a 3rd or 4th rune page, 3 or 4 full unique sets of runes, and the required number of champs for ranked play (I think 16?) by the time we were level 30 using nothing but iP, they would be giving us too 'free' of an experience. I disagree with that line of thinking, as there are always going to be impatient/wealthy people who purchase bundles, boosts, and champs with RP, not to mention all of the inevitable skin hype.

H0riz0n2342/9/2015, 12:52:59 AM1 votes

I agree, I was gonna get a tier 3 rune of CD reduction but found out 1 of them was 800 IP. Yeah way to expensive I think the most expensive the normal marks, seals, and glyphs should me at is like 400 and quintessences like 800 to 1000. 2000 IP for one quintessence is A load of crap and way 2 expensive.

Killer X 122/9/2015, 1:13:59 AM1 votes

Rune pages cost too much even when there is a 2 for 6300IP sale. Shit is crazy.
