are the hextech keys still a thing?

I feel like ive played way too many matches and have gotten little reward for them. I understand the chests are once every 6 days + 1 for each champ + and S rank. Ive got like 7 of them. It seems since the mage changes, the key drop rate is non existent. and honestly riot, I have all the runes, and champs, and have ip saved for the new champion. I liked the chest key idea, because it gave me something to work forward to, like an on going achievement. And I don't care much for the toxicity and right now (broken ap champs) ratio. Plus Aram and casual games are more my thing. but even grouping with friends and playing all night, you figure one of use 5 would get a key fragment playing for hours on end. idk is there a bug or something since the new patch

There's a bug right now where you can't get keys if you're playing with a champion you don't own.

That's not a bug. You don't receive Hextech crafting components for champions you don't own.

You are supposed to receive keys but not chests on champions you don't own.

False. Per the Hextech Crafting FAQ:

Champion Mastery is about expressing depth with champions you play as part of your champ roster. If you want to earn chests or keys with a champ on free rotation, you’ll need to unlock them and add them to your collection.

I could swear I saw a red post recently that said this was a bug.

You did. From the Crafting support article:

Note: There's currently a bug which prevents you from earning key fragments if you're playing a champion you don't own. This is unintended, and we're working on a solution.

Ha! I knew I wasn't crazy.

Oh, I'm sure you're still crazy. I know I am. Playing Jhin does that to a person, I think. [slayer-pantheon-thumbs]

Riot changed their mind then. From the Hextech Crafting support article:

Thanks for the info. I'm surprised they didn't publish this in a more boards-facing page... that would have been a nice update to know.

Socrates mentioned it on Reddit. Maybe Riot didn't think it was worth stating more officially, since they haven't actually implemented that change yet.

That is true

There is a monthly reset on the % drop rate of key fragments. This reset is determined by when your last reset was, or when your first key fragment was earned. I picked up three key fragments last night after a drought of almost two weeks, meaning I must have finally hit my second reset (first one was about mid April with the first fragment earned back on the launch of Hextech on March 16th).

It's obnoxious. It's easy to earn four chests, but it feel impossible to get more than a single key each month. I think that drop rate needs to refresh more frequently or it needs to be re-evaluated. Chests shouldn't be easier to obtain than keys imo.

honestly I find it dumb there is even a drop rate on them

In theory, most players will run out of champions to earn chests with before the season resets. For instance, I have 15 champions with level 5 mastery (10 Supports and 5 Junglers). Of these, I have already earned chests on 12 of them. I might have another month or two before I have to either pick up new Supports and Junglers or earn chests on my champions that are geared towards the roles I don't usually do.

I suppose that makes sense, though being in a pre-made with decent players lets you dance all over that limitation. I've been maxed out on chests since around the second week of crafting being live--which sucks because it means that I keep getting S ranks that could have landed me a chest had I the inventory space.

I mean I find the drop rate pretty dumb first off, but the fact you have to scrounge up 3 of these key fragments just to make one key.....then knowing my luck id get a champ out of that box (owning all the champs) I just feel like its not worth the grind

Bhagswag1 votes

I haven't gotten a key fragment in more than a month. More than a month.

I diversify my champ pool, and play all lanes. Often with at least one friend.

MegaManYYZ1 votes

why are you complaining about a free feature to get free stuff? everyone knows that drop rates lower the more fragments you get.

FatADCsMatter1 votes

well believe it or not, there was a time where game content was always free. so us gamers that grew up in that period of time enjoy working for things like free content or secret whatevers. theres no real point in the grind to get keys if you only grind like 4 a month during the reset. But im sure youre one of those kids that likes to spend his parents cash on content. its whatever man

MegaManYYZ1 votes

what? game content was free when you had to PAY FOR THE GAME. what are even talking about?

just because you don't understand how hextech keys drop, you're going to call me a child? lol
