Autofill is ruining League
Tl;dr: There has been a decline in quality supports because most of them are from autofill and don't want to play support.
No I'm not salty about getting stuck in an autofill position (well... at least not in ranked). Autofill is an issue simply because of the sheer volume of games where your support is an autofill. Getting a good support (or ADC for that matter) when going solo was already a bit hit-and-miss, but I feel like there's been a definite dip in quality supports since autofill was introduced.
Now if you remember, Riot hinted back when new champ select was released that there would be incentives to play sparsely populated roles. I thought, ooh does that mean extra IP? extra key fragments? But it seems that the incentive is just that you won't get autofilled for your next game. The way to improve the support population is to get more long term support players; get people to commit to the role. What we have instead is a constant stream of supports that just don't want to be there. They already have a bad taste in their mouth going into the game and it shows.
As a little side note I've had games where I duo with a friend; we set our first picks to bot and support and one of us ends up not getting it. Why doesn't it put whoever this random support is in a game that needs one and let us duo? That just seemed kind of odd.
I understand the goal of autofill. It has definitely improved queue times, but if the side affect is a decline in game quality then is it really worth it? This is just some constructive criticism and is purely anecdotal, but I just thought I'd get my 2 cents in :).
