How do you really build Ardent censer supports when you are 
or just tank supports in general? Still go the usual 
as core items and hope for the best? Going vs a

as their support makes them so hard to kill once 
is completed. Not sure if I just had bad games or I'm not making enough "plays" or just having bad comps etc etc but some advice would be appreciated.

No, go Bond of Stone and build Ardent Censor ftw.
You can use any mage "support" against it. Grievous wounds is also highly effective. A quick, early Bramble Vest helps a lot, since it essentially negates Ardent's heal.
However, I suggest against . Take 
instead, it lets you build tankier.

Usually I see metaslaves and they fall apart at the lvl2/3 engage when they realize blindly picking janna/soraka blindly into champs than can walk past the minion wave and engage on them or their adc with no consequence isn't worth the ardent censor.
If they have 2 or more champs that benefit from lifesteal/censor I'd get a bramble vest. If the enemy adc is 0/7 that ardent censor ain't gonna do anything for them.
Leaving this here to remind myself to post later. I'm gonna put some interesting things that I found worked against this meta.

I'm not a supp main, but whenever i play alistar stoneplate+locket is a must.
Thornmail is a decent choice to apply grievous wounds and adaptive helm will give you some MR and reduce the on hit magic damage.
I usually try to gank mid whenever botlane is pushed so my midlaner can get strong enough to delete their soraka/adc (warn your adc when you do this or they will die solo 8/10 times).
Bonus points if your jungler comes with you to tilt their mid extra hard.
A lot of stupid supports love to stick next to their ADCs, so a single good AoE capturing both of them should do. Most mages can easily outrange these enchanters and your abilities can't really be peeled from if you can abuse that range.
This probably won't directly answer your question, but it hopefully helps shit feel less bad.
Currently the only solution is to either risk it or abuse it yourself, and if you ever get an adc that cannot abuse ardent like say jhin due to his mechanics just dodge in champ select or lose.

Oh and Mobi boots in their, and how early I get them depends on how well I feel I can make plays roaming. If my enemy laner is something fairly aggressive, Sona/Lulu with a Cait/Draven/Trist/etc I tends to stay in lane a bit longer, but if not I'll get those boots pretty quickly and start roaming.
Funny enough the patch came out a few days after writing this (feelsbadman) but thanks everyone for the contribution :) saved me some extra brain CELLS :D
