So the temptation to try new champs in ranked queues is a leading cause of lost LP?

StarGuardianWeeb··101 votes·3,566 views

In champ select upgrades, concerning hextech chest filter, Riot says: Since the temptation to try new champs in ranked queues is a leading cause of lost LP ,this filter only applies to non-ranked queues.

But yet anytime someone mentions disabling brand new champions in ranked for a patch so that way people are forced to only play and learn them in normal games and not cost people LP, Riot/Players claim that doing something like that is unnecessary because people should be allowed to try new things and be allowed to do that wherever they want.

There is a difference between encouraging something and preventing people from doing it.

Fairly certain it was just a joke. It's not actually a leading cause of lost LP, people just like to claim it is.

I don't know if they are only talking about Brand new champions. I have had plenty of people who Tried "New" champions in their ranked games. As in recently bought champions. They kinda figured it's like teaching your child to swim by throwing him in the deep end of the pool.

SnakDatSmilesBak2 votes

Yeah but you don't do that when there's other kids bc chances are someone's going to drown someone else

Can you give me a situation where a Diamond player trying out Darius for the first time against a Diamond Riven main isn't going to be bodied?

Sorry, but it is a leading cause of lost LP at high rating.

Wigglepufftuff9 votes

Not a diamond player, so i wouldn't know, but i'm pretty sure a diamond wouldn't be stupid enough to try a new champion in ranked

This is kind of what I think as well, at that level you're either good enough that you can pick a champion and do well, or you're smart enough to realize that you can't pick someone you've never played in ranked. They didn't get to diamond in the first place by being idiots.

Altonia11 votes

Used to be a diamond player, can confirm that I ~~ tried new champions~~ was stupid in ranked and that it happens semi frequently.

That said, both teams do it. Part of the problem, while not the whole problem, is if you're playing at X level, and your normal rating is only Z level, then "practicing" a champ in normal is a very different experience than what you would face in ranked.

Back when I was dia I played with a ton of bronze-gold friends and rarely plat+, I'd play with them for a week, come back to dia and suddenly be struggling because I picked up many bad habits of lower divisions. Where you practice is the level you play at.

Oh my friend, you really didnt play in d5. Idk how many times I got a guy who fed like shit, then I checked his match history and he didnt play that champ in the last 50 games. But cool that he played it in my game and lost for all of us.

I don't think the depths of 0 LP Diamond 5 with silver level MMR count for that statement.

not to mention their bullshit double standards about claiming to promote teamwork yet unless you personally get an S you are not getting that box, so in other words they actually promote selfish play, stealing all the farm, stealing all the ward last hits, stealing all the kills, never trying to save somebody from dying as you might die yourself, etc.

and also not to mention ornn having game breaking bug but instead of disabling him they in a hidden away infobox told players to "lol just change your settings"

i mean if your yi gets fed af and you go 0/19 in lane you shoudlent be getting a chest

why not? what if the only reason yi got an S was that you went in and CCed or damaged players on the other team and died in the progress so yi could clean up?

FearlessCreator35 votes

because you died 19 times.

NiceTryVi1 votes

But, if you were duo'd with that Yi, you get the chest.

Tarquin961 votes

cuz he knows you are bad and still plays with you

NiceTryVi1 votes

So that means you are entitled to the chest...ok. Excellent logic.

Slythion6 votes

and how do you propose Riot is to detect that?

Meriipu3 votes

why detect it? If somebody on your team gets an S then your overall teamwork can not have been that bad

SociopathFriend3 votes

Hell yes it could. I once got an S rank on Nami because my ADC couldn't CS and barely could fight. I proceeded to solo-demolish the lane while the ADC ran around in the jungle trying to scrounge up some gold.

No teamwork was used there.

Serika Zero1 votes

maybe you had no team work with your adc, but you had to have some with the rest of your team

Slythion7 votes

you literally never seen someone do amazing as the rest of the team is dysfunctional? I find that incredibly hard to believe...

To just assume someone can't get an S rank without their team and to want to essentially "hand out" S ranks just because 1 person on the team did well is just...stupid

You can't honestly think this is a good idea?

aspects11 votes

someones just mad they cant get an S stop one tricking and maybe you will

Anu3isII1 votes

On the other hand, if you are the reason Yi is that fed, you get nothing.

I experienced it too many times as a Jungler, where I give up the jungle and gank almost constantly to apply pressure (and succed, otherwise I would jungle more and gank less) and make the laners fed to the point they can win the game by themselves. The result? Four S/S- scores and one A+ on my part. You may say this happened once and I just complain, but it happened so often that I literally gave up caring about hextech chests.

I've gotten boxes without personally getting an S, because my teammate got an S and I queued with them. It's part of them promoting teamwork instead of "whatever, I just play solo."

yeah but what about the people on your team you did not queue with?

Are you not supposed to work together with those as well?

not according to riots actions (ignoring their words as their actions speak otherwise).

DrCyanide5 votes

You're suppose to work together with randoms to win (easier to get S's when your team wins, more IP/XP/Champion mastery points if you win). You get the most out of the game (literally and figuratively) if you queue up with others repeatedly (S chests from their S's, IP Boost weekends, the Clash rewards that are in testing, in addition to the solo rewards).

AKA: Teamwork with randoms is good, but teamwork with a consistent group is better. That's what their entire structure supports.

so they do not care they they are promoting greedy play in solo players rather than teamwork? if you are level 30, have a bunch of IP, do not care about mastery, there is pretty much no reason to play to win if you would like chests.

DuskDaUmbreon4 votes

If you got an S, you're more likely to have cooperated than if an ally did.

Serika Zero1 votes

yes, that's rito's double standard. its only team work if you were friends beforehand looool

The primary cause of lost LP in ranked is queuing up for ranked games.

50% of players who do so lose LP.

LXII3 votes

An entire patch is a long time to disable a champion in ranked.

It doesn't take me a month to learn how a champion works, only a few games.

Glory ln Death3 votes

There's a difference between allowing something and encouraging it.

While I don't think people ought to play new champs in Ranked, I also don't think Riot should outright ban it (maybe for the first one or two days).

Douglas Funnie2 votes

Well, right now. I like what they did with the filter update. And I don't want them allowing hextech chest filter into Ranked, thank you very much.

Hellioning2 votes

Holy shit it's a joke.

Velasan2 votes

The continuing issue with gating champions is that it would have to apply to ALL champions.

Otherwise you could take any champion, older or new, and there is no guarantee that either team knows what it does, how to play it, or play against it.

Then you would have to gate all champions by forcing people to play them in normals first, and there are already enough gates on this game and a steep learning curve to newer players.

If you make people wait a week they just won't play the character for a week then still try them for the first time in ranked, but it simultaneously kills the hype for a champion which has already been out for a week.

If you don't want to trust any of the player base... fine.. but you can't police everything without ruining the game.

So what about people who can play multiple champions in multiple roles, but generally tend stick to only 1-2 champions?

Here I hoped that legitimate ranked players would benefit, but no.

people trying new champs in ranked Rito adding something to lower the temptation to try new champs in ranked when ever someone or the community says disable new champs for the patch in ranked Rito says no cause they want people to try new things in ranked

Kyunsei1 votes

They just know the current ranking (A,B,C,S,...) system tend to lead to more selfish gameplay and they don't want people to play like this in ranked.

Also, some player might end up playing different champ as they normally would have picked.

SarcasticShepard1 votes

I'd say the primary loss of LP in ranked is due to the impressively inept matchmaking system.

Mellori1 votes

Personally with the mastery system out, I think Riot should fix it so only your "mastered" champions can be played in Ranked. Limit it to mastery 6/7, or even 5/6/7 if so inclined. Smite has a system like this where you need at least a certain mastery level before you can take the character into a ranked game. Before the system came out I could see why it would be hard to gate what someone played, but this way if you're that determined to take the champion into a ranked game you at least have to sit down and put some hours into the champion first. The only ones I could honestly see this negatively affecting are smurf accounts, but if you're smurfing it shouldn't be too hard to get some mastery on a champion, especially if you're smurfing at a lower rank.

Personal two cents on the matter.

Champion Skin1 votes

What if the champion get reworked? Then the champions can often end up like pretty much a new champion just with the same name

Or if someone wants to swap?

Damn guys, relax.

This is one step towards the right goal. Give them time.
