Isn't Purposely Tilting Enemies a Moral Delima?

Azaleax·6/28/2016, 6:46:34 PM·18 votes·1,951 views

Not flaming or raging :) A lot of people spam taunt or say things in chat for the sole purpose of tilting people. It seems wrong to me to purposely try to ruin someone's playing experience, just for a win. I mean, I realize it works, it just doesn't seem morally right. Do you disagree, or agree? Why or why not?

There is a line between messing with your opponents' psyche and trash talking like "kys", "ggez", "hey c*nt", etc.

Spamming emote and taunts is like giving your opponent a gesture, in real life sports, of "I am watching you" kind of thing.

Many people would argue that getting upset because people on the Internet you don't know are beefing you is a 'moral dillema'

I never walk into a game with the intent to get people pissed off, but If I see a loudmouth on the enemy team who says nothing except inflammatory remarks to either my team or his--and they start to do poorly themselves--I'll jump at the oportuniry to put them to shame.

Trash talk is a part of sports, and it just so happens that a fair portion of league of legends players can't handle trash talk

Valor Bot6/28/2016, 8:33:57 PM5 votes

I agree. Purposely influencing -- or attempting to influence -- other people's confidence, actions, and/or attitudes in a negative way in order to increase your own chances of success against them is morally questionable, if not downright wrong. Not everyone will agree with me on that one though, there are simply those who subscribe to an 'egoist' moral code that states whatever is in their own interests is what is right and therefore "morally good."

KING ATTILA6/28/2016, 9:16:07 PM4 votes

Muhammad Ali did trash talk. Greatest of All Time.

Your goal is to win. If the enemy is susceptible to getting tilted, that is their own fault.

If you are weak mentally, then disable all chat.

Can't take the heat, stay out of the kitchen...

Yeah, people that say you should be gunned down are crossing the line, people that say "kys" are crossing the line, but saying "Nice flash" after someone fail flashes is trash talk. Know the difference, everyone

DeadlyStalker6/28/2016, 6:47:57 PM3 votes

How does it work?

If you are loosing and they taunt you, it dosn't really matter since you are already losing. If you are winning them taunting you will give you a good laugh at best.

Tilting the enemy by talking trash and spaming taunts isn't strategy, it's poor sportsmanship plain and simple. Ask anyone who has played football when teams start talking trash and it causes a fist fight. It's half of the reason we have a report system to begin with. The point of a game is to have fun, not to ruin someone else's day.

All is fair in love and war. Competitive games/sports count as both. (tilting people on purpose is rude, but imo fine. Don't go verbally harassing people though, that's a little more than just rude)

Spamming laugh is fine. BMing is fine. But talking shit in all chat or intentionally stirring up arguments to tilt someone is not fine

Milodic Mellodi6/29/2016, 9:10:22 PM2 votes

It's a valid strategy, although it's morally wrong depending on your perception of morality. I just think it's wrong because I like to go against my opponents at their best, and it makes me feel cheap when I make them worse than they should be.

JustMonika136/30/2016, 1:25:07 AM2 votes

Looking up if anyone on the enemy team is on a losing streak to camp the living hell out of them is fine (they're probably already tilted as it is).

A little bit of BMing such as laugh spamming or mastery icon spamming or little things like typing "?" in all chat is fine.

Going into calling people a cnt or a shthead? That's reportable stuff right there.

If you dont want to be taunted you should not play a competitive online game

The Bearded Bard6/29/2016, 7:25:08 AM2 votes

Hmmmmmmm it's a pretty controversial topic.

During any sport, I would pretty much do anything to win. I really only had two boundaries: I wouldn't purposefully injure another player, and I wouldn't flop.

Other than those two things, nothing was off limits. Shit-talking, mind games, running out the clock, you name it, I've done it.

All that being said, at the end of every game, regardless of the outcome, allies and rivals shook hands. I apply the same concept to league.

Verbal and psychological warfare are key to this game just as much as gameplay warfare.

just drop the classic "hehe xd"

LadyRenly6/28/2016, 9:41:56 PM2 votes

trash talking or being negative towards the enemy can be reportable, but sometimes if I am desperate for a win and the enemy definitely seems agitated I will ward the enemy corpses and quote lines from my character. For example, if garen is giving me trouble and I manage to kill him, especially by BS means such as surviving with 7hp, I will all chat "Tall folk don't last long around here!"

ltmetal6/28/2016, 9:47:29 PM2 votes

Personally, I view the internet as a crucible. You spend time on the internet, and it either thickens your skin or you shy away from internet communities.

Morality is subjective.

Irelia Bot6/29/2016, 6:00:10 PM1 votes

The danger of freedom is letting them see that you are not bound by their morality.

fluxanna6/29/2016, 7:02:33 AM1 votes

No, trying to trash other people to win is not just immoral but idiotic.

If you can just piss people off and it helps you win lp, you're not in your elo because your skill is there.

People don't taunt people because they want to win however, they do it because in real life, they're dicks.

But leave it to league of legends to get me so incensed about rude people....

EpicMusic6/29/2016, 9:06:26 PM1 votes

When i get a kill, when i die, when the enemy dies.. I just type in all chat is this

?

Never fails to tilt them hehehe

Modl Ryden l6/29/2016, 7:48:43 AM1 votes

Just do what I do, keep track of their emote spams. If someone spams an emote, on either side, more that 6 times in succession (when they make their champion twitch around), mute them, then report them when the game ends.

In most cases it's appropriate. When you spam that an emote that quickly it shows your intention of making sure the enemy [is bothered by it] can see it. In other cases, you're spamming excessive audio for all players in the match with the beginning of an emote's quote, like Lissandra's or Garen's famous, "I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I!"

Mephistophilis6/29/2016, 12:52:55 PM1 votes

in war everything is permitted, as a player you should never fall in enemies' trap

Rossonious6/29/2016, 3:52:20 PM1 votes

I'm immune to tilt and can't empathize with people who become tilted. I don't feel bad when I make them tilt.

Sometimes I will intentionally tilt an opponent if they seem overly susceptible and consider it a valid strategy like in poker or chess but I don't go out of my way to find a means to tilt people.
