Not very weird. I was good at a lot of champs from playing ARAM but I hadm't mastered any until I spent time learning their various nuances on SR (power spikes, ideal builds, how much damage my combo does with different item sets etc). SR is just a different world, and this is coming from somebody who has 4500 ARAM games.
