Malzahar is problematic by design

So yeah Malzahar . This guy is being talked about a lot right now. It seems riot will most likely nerf him somehow to get him out of botlane. But the problem seems to be his entire design, and I'm not sure why no one seems to be talking about this.

Over the years Riot has been pushing more and more toward making players interact.

  • Toplane was a lonely island with no near objective until baron spawned, so they added rift herald.
  • Old devourer which caused champions to afk farm jungle for 20minutes to finish got removed.
  • They added elemental drakes because no one would fight for dragon past 1st and 5th buff.
  • They added first tower blood so teams wouldn't avoid each other for 10minutes and just trade towers.
  • They nerfed or completely removed a lot of silences from champions because it completely kills interaction.

Personally I think this design idea of making players interact is great. So you can understand my confusion when malzahar turned into what he is now during the mage update, which happened AFTER all the above mentioned design changes took place.

His dot spreads from target to target, his voidlings multiply and do the work, he pokes from a distance with an aoe silence, and he has a ranged click ult that is also a suppression. His waveclear is completely autopilot and he can do this to every wave from a safe distance with a passive banshees veil.

**His entire kit just screams DON'T INTERACT WITH ME. ** You go in to trade? You'll most likely lose it since his passive will eat up your first bit of damage and voidlings will eat your face. You poked his passive out? He's now going to play super safe from far away until it's back up and this does not punish his CS at all because it's completely on autopilot.

Why was malzahar designed this way? Is it not a massive step backwards to riot's design philosophy?

I'm honestly surprised it took this long for malzahar's design to be a problem. I thought this would happen as soon as he got changed this way at the mage update...

well

he is a sitting duck to people who counter him like any other immobile mage..

u people get stuck on the lane phase to much.. he has clear weaknesses

So yeah Malzahar...

.... His entire kit just screams DON'T INTERACT WITH ME.

After all these years, FINALLY a champion that speaks to me.

Honestly I felt like that even before his rework.

Now that I think about it, a lot of his kit and core thematics can be kept if he were a bruiser.

A voidling army, but it has a short leash radius around Malzahar: more easily balanced. Malefic Visions, refreshed by melee attacks. Suppress fits a lot of frontline champions.

This is all very true, and needs more upvotes so that it gets read by someone in champion design. As he is, Malzahar does not fuel interesting game play for the user or the opponent.

I've noticed some weird feminist language leaking into the LoL boards...."oppressive" "problematic"

If Riot cared about their own "philosophies", we wouldn't have Locket or Redemption right now.
