Sightsone + GP5 upgrades?

So I was thinking what if we added different upgrade paths for sight stone so it could merge with current GP5 items. You could even keep the costs the same, just combined. This way supports aren't stuck with two slots being consumed for a GP5 item and a vision item. In rare cases junglers and such might be able to utilize it as well.

Just to clarify, I'm essentially saying remove Ruby Sightstone. The other maxed out GP5 items could then be upgraded a final time with Sightstone to get essentially the same item but maybe with a minor stat upgrade and the ability to place wards with it. This might require the addition of a new hotkey to utilize secondary active abilities on items though.

Typing this on my iPhone but I think you get the gist.

**TO CLARIFY: The GP5 items would NOT lose their active ability. They would simply gain a SECOND ability, the one to drop wards. Sorry for the confusion. **

Yeah, me too. To clarify a little more what I mean is the GP5 items would have two active abilities now. The one they currently have plus the ward drop. It would require two hotkeys or a special hotkey that can have two functions (ie by holding it down or something). Or an option for both.

the only problem is all of those GP5 items have active... which may be wasted if that must be removed...

item 3401 extra shield (although can be changed with other items like item 3190 but still) item 3092 some more damage and extra CC item 3069 some movespeed boost since most support almost never buy item 3800

the problem with this is: "if the item has two actives, what is the hotkey for the second active?" the answer is that there isn't one that is naturally intuitive, and thatis why there are currently no items with multiple active abilities.

(i ran into this one a while back too.)

Some good counter points here that I am having trouble debating. So, let me ask this. Should we give Sightstones more build paths on its own without bringing the GP5 items in the mix? The reason for combining them was to keep the end product as a Support niche item. We could go the other direction though and make Sightstones more appealing to other roles by giving it an end product that is useful for more than just dropping wards.

Or we could upgrade the Ruby Sightstone itself, not really changing anything else except recipe costs, and create an item that at least non-support tanks would be willing to buy. Maybe give it a little armor and magic resist.

What I don't like is the Support, who's the lowest gold earner, being the only one expected to ward maps (aside from Trinkets). But I also think 5 players per team with 3 wards each would give too much vision. Upgrading the Ruby Sightstone recipe to make it acceptable for tanks to purchase would on average add a second warder per team, which is probably just about right.

I'm also not a fan of late game supports being handicapped by being forced to waste an item slot for a Ruby Sightstone, which is why I had the original idea in the first place (so often I'm sitting on 3-4k gold but can't sacrifice my Sightstone). But it looks like combining it with the other support items may cause too many challenges.

Maybe the real solution is a new array of consumables to burn money on?

I sometimes feel like the support role is the red headed step child. The number of items you have to have, just to support your team while leaving you vulnerable adds to that feeling. I would love to see better item choices for the support role.

My Current support builds are:

item 3097 item 2049 item 3190 item 3110 item 3143 item 3117 (sell Targon's) item 3075 and item 3098 item 2049 item 3157 item 3222 item 3165 item 3117 (sell Frostfang) item 3135

The only way I wouldn't sell my GP10 item is if it built into a Sightstone Upgrade.

maybe have different kinds of sightstones that have different properties associated with it? The junglers have different things that grow out of the item 1039 , so maybe we can do the same thing with sightstone?

Example: item 2045 gives an additional 250 health (and I personally believe that is too low, can we make it an additional 400?). So maybe a "Sapphire Sightstone" grants the base 150 health and +20AP? or an additional 200 mana? An "Emerald Sightstone" that give the 150 health and +25AD? or +10%AS? The "Diamond Sightstone" that could have the 150 health and some Move Speed?

I'm no expert on numerical values, but does the concepts sound workable? It would give a bit of incentive for different positions to think about the Sightstone line.

Personally, I think we should make different sight stone options starting from Tier 1, not just tier 2 upgrades. Varying options for T2 (such as those you mention) would probably have to be stat inefficient and building other items is straight up better. Since the buff to yellow trinket upgrade, some supports have been skipping SS in favor of that since it's cheaper, slotless, can have just as much wards on the map as SS, and not having to back as often makes up for a lack of sweeper (I've seen supports roam for a long time, well past 6 minutes.) And not all supports benefit as much from the 150 HP as others do (Leona and other tank supports are ok with it, some squishy supports it wouldn't make a difference since if they are caught out, 150 hp won't do much, and Soraka pays more HP to heal when she builds it)

Some options could be a small amount of AP instead of HP, or options for more mana or mana regen. Although, I think SS (current and any future variants) should be able to passively recharge ward charges while roaming akin to Yellow Trinket upgrade.

Yep. I really wish Riot would comment on this idea, or at least acknowledge that they've seen it.

I upvoted that thread, hope Riot sees it or acknowledges it.
