The combination of liandris and rylais is the best tank killer but not every mage can use it. Of course void staff is a must but that should always be part of your kit anyways.

To be more precise:

Liandry for the %Health shred
Rylai for the Slow that double Liandry's shred
Void Staff for the %MRPen

Sorc boots and Abyssal also add MRPen, but it's flat, so not as useful as the other 3 against Tanks.

Finally, as the other 2 comments said, it's hard to itemize against Tanks as AP, because it's generally not your role to fight Tanks. It's ADC and Fighters's job.

If you can get away with it, item 3020 item 3116 item 3151 item 3135 .

This build works pretty well on Malzahar

If you can't do something like that, then you can often just rush Void Staff after your core item (i.e. ). Void Staff will boost your damage against tanks significantly by penetrating their MR (though it doesn't help much against health stackers) and it will increase your damage to squishy targets by a decent amount too.

Though, much of the time you just don't adapt your build against them specifically. The primary role of many mages is to bust squishy targets; if you itemize too heavily against the tank, then you may not have the damage to do that during teamfights or skirmishes.

I feel like any champs with decent scaling and low cooldowns can do decently against tanks.

Rylia's Crystal Scepter and Liandry's Torment ALWAYS work perfectly together against tanks. Liandry's does % health dmg passively, but if the target is slowed (in comes Rylai's) the % health dmg is doubled. Also Abyssal Scepter and Void Staff are very effective too

Honestly I wouldn't veer from your standard build besides a Abyssal Scepter most of the time. If there's like, 3 tanks, then maybe. But generally you're better off building raw damage+Void Staff and letting your ADC do their share of the work
