Aatrox is trash. I'm being serious here, and I actually like playing Aatrox. I do not recommend playing him in the slightest. The current best top laners are Fiora, Pantheon, Riven, Kled, Jax, Darius, and J4 (in no particular order). Aatrox is very nearly in the bottom 10. And before you ask, Aatrox isn't even worth playing jungle.
His play-rate is so low that you'll get conflicting information on his performance from various websites. I recommend using op.gg, as it's the most complete and comprehensive. Click on the summoner name in the "Aatrox Masters" sections, filter their match history, and you'll be able to get an even better idea of the build trend you should follow.
Aatrox previously was worth playing for fun and nobody had any experience facing him.
The mini rework left him worse in every way. He has a completely conflicting kit now and poor build paths.
He is extremely easy to outplay and camp in lane.
