Ranked matchmaking question

Ok so in a nutshell I was silver 2 last season. After placements I got placed in bronze 3 (which I don't have a problem with since I am awful at this game and strive to make silver again this season). I skip bronze 2 and make it to bronze 1 and now I have been in 4 separate placement series for silver 5, failing them all. My question is: why am I being placed against high silver and low golds in my bronze 1 placement matches? Wouldn't it only make sense to place me against bronze 1's with a range from bronze 2 through silver 5? Isn't that the point of ranked, to play against your "rank"? I only know people are these ranks based off of borders in loading screen and me asking what they are (assuming they are honest). Seems like an odd matchmaking system to me.
