As someone who doesn't play Janna, I think its weird her ult does no damage.

Is there some sort of balance reason behind this because her ult would literally do everything with CC, damage and a AOE heal. The last time i played Janna was about 3 years ago and it was one of the things that really bugged me.

So what's up with her ult?

It's a utility tool. I don't even think I use it for heal that much, just a quick push-out then start running and use other spells. As bad as that sounds, it's not actually that bad. In the right moment that ult is a nightmare for the opponents.

If you let it channel, it does heal an okay amount.

But flashing past the enemy to knock them back to your team? Gives your enemies PTSD >:D

yaaaaaas. I love it when there's an opportunity like that open for me to jump in, lol

Yes, it's the only knock-back in the game that doesn't do damage. Lulu and Diana are the only other two with displacements that lack damage, and between the 3 of these we have one each of knock-up, knock-back, and pull that do not have damage. Seems like a pretty fair distribution to me.

I can't think of a reason Janna's ult would need damage, either from a thematic or gameplay perspective. In game design, wind-based abilities are usually implemented as either large-scale bursts of force, or more focused cutting attacks. In League we have Janna covering one of these, and Yasuo (and Riven's Wind Slash) representing the other side.

As far as gameplay is concerned, are you thinking that Janna's kit doesn't have enough to it? She's a highly defensive support (that can also poke reasonably with Zephyr and Whirlwind if you feel like it) that focuses largely on either mitigating damage as it comes in or inhibiting the enemy's ability to dish it out. She has 2 displacements with good range that are both fairly easy to use, a single-target slow, and one of the strongest shields in the game that aids with both offense and defense. Just those seem like enough to me, but she also has a good-sized heal thrown in too. There aren't very many champions in this game with both a heal and a shield that can be used on allies. I think as of right now it's just Janna, Kayle (if you count her ult, which you should =P), Sona, Lulu, and (in just a little while) Taric. And Kayle and Sona both have a large portion of their power budget focused elsewhere in their kit, so at least one each of their heals/shields is lackluster. Janna gives up nearly all damage in order to get the best set of defensive abilities in the game, with a grand total of 4 direct life-saving mechanics in one kit.

TL;DR Don't dive Janna =P

I was just asking if there was a reason to why she didn't do damage on her ult because her other abilities even the one where she throws a bird at people does.

She's been nerfed basically seasonally since she keeps on being one of the top supports to the point of pushing out other supports (sorry), so adding more power to her does seem like it'd anger the balance gods. (And if damage was added at the cost of other utility, various janna mains would probably be upset since our job isn't to do damage, it's to keep our carries alive.)

Besides, if the idea is the magic winds somehow have healing effects, it seems thematically confusing for them to also hurt people.

But she literally throws a bird at people for damage and already has a magical wind attack that does damage. If we're talking about theme I think Janna's a bit out there.

But thanks for the clarity. I'm not fully aware of hte support world in terms of whose on top.

It already has a numerical effect on fights in the channeled heal, so it doesn't need to do damage as well in order to be an effective ultimate in a fight where the disengage is not useful. What this means is that there is no reason it has to do damage to be effective. However, there are major reasons why it shouldn't.

If it did damage, power would have to be stripped from something else to accomodate that numerical strength, and that means that either the healing or the CC would have to be nerfed. That would suck for Janna players. We aren't playing the champion because we want to do damage. We don't want damage. We want utility. Giving up utility for a damage increase would be miserably unfun from our perspective. It also needlessly complicates the use case and makes the champion less unique. We don't need to support the ult being a nuke because it already has a robust enough purpose as protection. Decreasing its unique power in exchange for something that any other champion can bring is not good design.
