Help getting better (I'm low silver)

So I do not think that I am a remotely good player at all. I have played with some friends that are gold and they tell me I'm terrible but they never offer any help with what I can do to get better so I'm turning to the boards for help. I find that I really often end up feeding 6+ kills because I am such an overly aggressive player. I try to play passive but then I end up going aggressive without even realizing it. I've also been told that my decision making is 'iffy at best'.

Last season I just kind of messed around in ranked and never really tried to climb so my mmr was terrible at the start of this season. This season I've climbed from bronze 5 to silver 4 but now I'm stuck and I'm realizing that if I want to reach my goal of gold that I need to drastically improve at this game.

Any help, tips, tricks, and just general advice is much appreciated!

tl;dr: I'm silver 4. I want to reach gold. Any and all advice is appreciated!

In the past 2 weeks you have played 29 different champions. 95% of your games are in ranked solo. Stick to one role. Choose 2-4 champions for different situations.

If nothing else, Don't play ranked with champions that you don't have a minimum of mastery 5 on. Your asking to be dumpstered by the enemy team otherwise.

Cs better. You should aim for 90+ cs per 10 minutes.

Look at the minimap for 2 seconds every 5 seconds. (Or check it inbetween each cs.)

Stop trying to farm the enemy team and work towards objectives instead. If you aren't 80%+ sure that you can win a fight, back off and farm/group.

Winning isn't about having fun all the time. You need to master the basics.

Think of it this way. You are 5/2/1 in a solo lane with 75 cs. Your opponent is 1/5/3 with 140 cs.

Who is winning the lane?

Cs. Minimap awareness. Picking your objectives accurately. Everything above is easier to learn and master if you know your champions strengths/weaknesses.

Random information over and done with.

Good Luck.

  1. pick a role to main.
  2. pick about 2 champs to main for said role. Be proficient for your elo at more champs than that - but pick 2 to "master" - basically play much better than your elo at those champs.
  3. learn matchups - who should win? How do they look to win a trade? How do you win a trade? It can differ based on who you are against. Ex: Renekton's typical trade is to dash in, and weave autos between his stun and q, and dash back out before the enemy can trade back. Vs a jax who can dodge, a fiora who can riposte stun (and then destroy you), a poppy (who can block your dash), or a jayce (who can smash you away and then destroy you); you trade differently. Does the enemy do the same thing over and over when they trade damage with you? How can you punish that?
  4. Adjust your build. What items should you build first? What does your complete build look like vs your opponent - and the enemy team as a whole? If an enemy mage is getting fed vs if an enemy adc or ad jungler is getting fed, adjust your build accordingly. Maybe you need more magic/armor pen to kill a fed enemy tank. Maybe you normally build pd first, but need ninja tabi because your opponent wins early trades and is a strong ad aa champ. Maybe you need more magic resist. Always have OPTIONS in mind going into the game. Ex: for mr as an ad bruiser, you could look to item 3194 (if they're spammy like cass, kayle, rumble) item 3065 (good all around; good if need some hp and/or building some lifesteal) item 3156 (good if you need some extra ad, but still want mr).
  5. watch for tells - is the enemy playing differently? Could they be baiting you into getting ganked? Is the enemy about to level up and get a level advantage on you? You might want to back off.
  6. find some streamer(s) or YouTube vids by high elo players and learn how to better play your champ.
  7. THINK. Think about why a trade went well for you or why it did not. Why did a teamfight go well/poorly? How could you have done better - even if you won the teamfight? Can I set up a lane freeze here? Should I push? Do I stay for tower, or am I going to die for it; if so, is it worth? Think about these things AHEAD of time; if you do it reactively, you will die while trying to decide. Do you contest dragon/baron? Do you sneak the other one instead while the enemy is doing baron/drag? Or... maybe you push mid and top/bot tower instead of contesting. Do you bait baron or just force/rush it? If the enemy does come, do you turn to fight or stay on the objective? Sure you CAN try to 5v5 after just getting baron - especially since you won the last 5v5 - but you might lose this one AND lose baron buff because of it. And you are low because of baron and haven't shopped; the enemy is full hp AND spent more gold than you have... making it risky and generally not worth.

8 THINK. THINK, THINK, THINK. Itemization, which enemy/enemies to focus down first in teamfights. Splitpush or teamfight? And just because YOU can splitpush doesn't mean your team can 4v4 or 3v3 without dying and losing - sometimes even if you can 1v1 or 1v2, you need to group. Etc.

If u really doubt that you're mechanically good, and you really want to climb, start playing some easy support.

Also you average about 7-8 deaths per game. thats not good.
and you're average CS is also around 5-6 per minute per game. thats also not good. (1 game velkoz mid with 75 cs in 31 minute game..)

so like, die less and farm minions better. play for late game if you didn't get some lucky early kills(like you're enemy laner and jg tower diving you at level 3 giving you a double)

  • Control wards
  • learn to trade better
  • build defense if ahead, not offence
  • Play annie/zac/chogath, they will help you improve in top/mid/jg

Thanks for all the advice. I think I might try to one-trick draven since he is a champ that I don't end up getting bored playing. I also don't think that my mechanics with him are too bad. I think I need to focus on cs, having the right mindset, and transitioning from a reactive to a proactive player
