Thornmail Remake

Please note: These ideas were thought of before the release of the new masteries. I just never had a chance to post them. So in order to keep tanks from getting out of control, these items may be deemed unnecessary or strong. (Feedback is appreciated).

Thornmail: This item does not do what it should do and is seldom bought. The passive doesn't do what is necessary and often is healed through by lifesteal items due to the sheer output basic attack oriented champ can dish out.

My suggestion would be to create two types of mails that branch out into two new items. Similar to the Last Whisper trees. Both would offer armor/magic resist and a small amount of health, but the passives would be unique to the item and you can only purchase one of them.

First item:

Mirror Force

Health: 200 Armor: 60 Magic Resist: 30

Unique Passive -- Reflection: Returns 15% of the physical damage taken (+25% bonus armor) from basic attacks and on-hit effects back to its source as magic damage. (This hasn't changed from regular Thornmail) Unique Active -- Refraction: Upon activation the hosts body glows with a faint silver aura to signify the effect taking place. 30% of damage the host receives is returned to the source as magic damage. During this effect the host is granted 5 magic penetration (+1 per 10 bonus magic resist the host has). The effect lasts for 3 seconds and has a cool down of 60 seconds.

The main reason I thought of this item was to give tanks a way to redirect more types of damage effectively rather than just playing a passive role on an item that really doesn't counter anyone as well as it should. I added the penetration effect to further benefit the effective of this item. We all know you can counter Thornmail easily with MR or Lifesteal (god forbid you get both See Mercurial Scimitar). This item is supposed to be the reflect damage item whereas the next item has better effects suited to physical damage dealers.

Second item:

Brambleback Platemail

Health: 250 Armor: 75 Magic Resist: 30

Unique Passive -- Reflection: Returns 15% of the physical damage taken (+25% bonus armor) from basic attacks and on-hit effects back to its source as magic damage. (This hasn't changed from regular Thornmail) Unique Passive -- Thornmail: This passive overrides the previous passive when the host is brought below 50% health due to champion damage. Upon being brought below 50% health, the host glows in a faint green aura to signify the effect taking place. For the next 5 seconds, spikes are shot out in an AoE around the host every (1 second) dealing physical damage to all nearby enemies and inflicts Grievous Wounds. If the host continues to take damage from enemy champions before the effect expires the effect is increased by 1 second for a maximum of 5 additional seconds. (10 seconds maximum activation time). The cooldown on this active is 60 seconds. The first passive goes back into effect while this effect

If the host is below 50% health due to non-champion sources the secondary passive will not activate. If the host is below 50% health and is damaged by an enemy champion the effect will trigger.

Spike damage: This would be based on level. I don't know a proper leveling format for the damage for all level or time increments in the game, but the damage would roughly be 20/25/30/35/40 physical damage per spike. Note: Enemies can only hit by (1) spike every second spikes are released.

AoE Range: To be determined but I was thinking it'd be 300-350.

Grievious Wounds: Duration lasts for 5 seconds and is refreshed every time you're hit by a spike.

Hello Summoner!

The magic penetration on mirror force seems like it would be too powerful on ability power tanks such as moaki, etc. Imagine these tanks getting 20+ flat magic penetration with there already high base values such as moaki's 13% max health damaging w or Elise 220 + 8% of enemies current health.

The magic penetration is just too strong of a effect favoring ability powered tanks.

The second items spike passive just just too powerful and counters melee champions way too hard. The power of this passive also stems from the champions who will buy it which are tanks. There ability to be in the middle of a fight and stick to a target for the full (40x5x10 [Level 18 damage x 5 enemy champions x 10 second full duration])= 2000 damage combined with the 15% return passive is just way too strong. Especially complied with sunfire cape causing there to be way too much offensive stats for such a defensive item.

Do you think there is anything you could tone down while keeping the items unique? Or are they just an overall bad concept for LoL in its current state?

I thought adding magic pen would be a good idea since it only applies to the items active and not the champions ability. I know the return damage on Thornmail's passive is easily negated, so I wanted to avoid the passive becoming useless.

Also, the spikes could be intercepted by other champions. Similar to how Ashe's arrows work.

Absolutely busted

Could you specify what makes it busted? Is it just the actives? Or the combination of passive/actives, or is it just the numbers?

The first item moreso than the second one. Imo its over statted (40 armor for 30 mr isn't too bad and then 30 health on top of that and thornmail passive makes it better than thornmail) plus you add the extra magic damage part. Idk decent concept just maybe think of restatting the item and the other parts of it may need to be toned down. The second one is basically sunfire and thornmail in 1 item with mr and health.

It simply needs to be changed to:

  1. Doing Physical instead of Magic (not really necessary, but a preference of mine).
  2. Inflict Grevious Wounds when someone attacks you.

Thornmail is currently useless due to how Lifesteal hardcounters it. You're better of buying one of the more popular Armour choices such as Frozen Heart or Randuin's.
