why am i continuing to play with d1s and d2s when i have 20 lp gains in diamond 4.
does riot not realize there is a skill difference between these elos?

Because your MMR is currently much higher than the average d4. If you continue with this trend you would most likely be in that elo (d1-2). It's currently placing you against players of your expected or projected elo. However, eventually you'll start to plane out and fall into the elo that you're actually at (whether that's up in the d1-2) or somewhere between where you're at now and there.
I have a second account that I just main rammus for fun that has planed out at plat2-1 elo. Even though I'm d4 on this one. Just sort of happens. When I started out in ranked I got placed like silver 2 and within a few games I was facing gold 1's and up. It's just how it works.
well they got 2 diamond 4 in their team as well, and if this has to be matched better, your queue times are going to be 30 minutes longer, so...
