To explain a little more, the basic idea of Factions is:

  • We pick a few in-universe factions. Currently, we're doing Noxus, Piltover, and Shurima.
  • We pick Champions for those factions, mostly drawing from Champions who are "from" those places, but coloring outside the lines as necessary to keep it interesting.
  • We come up with a League dispute involving those factions. In the current storyline, Lines in the Sand, Azir has raised the Sun Disc and proclaimed a new Shuriman Empire—an Empire which does not recognize the thousands of years of colonial borders drawn over Shurima by the great powers of Valoran. A war broke out almost instantly. The League has managed to contain the fighting to Shurima, and prevent troop deployments from anyone other than Noxus and Piltover, the two "great powers" who had sizable forces in Shurima when the fighting started.
  • Once the storyline kicks off, anyone can start or join a match anytime, as a custom game, using these rosters. Results from each match are sent in, scored, and added to a "Balance of Power" scoreboard. Matches are worth more or fewer points based on the skill matchups of the teams.
  • Summoners declare for a faction, and fight for them on the Fields of Justice.
  • The storyline develops based on how these matches go.
  • Storylines run for about three months. At that point, we finish the story based on how the matches went, then have a vote to decide on a new set of factions.
  • Regardless of who you fought for last time, we start fresh with each new storyline.

It's meant to be a fun game mode that poses some novel strategic puzzles due to the limited rosters. It's also intended as a way to tie lore and gameplay together, putting players (Summoners) in the midst of the story, and leaving it up to their performance on the Fields to decide how the story plays out.

Matches happen whenever you or someone else sets one up.

To get started:

  • Pick a faction and sign up.
  • Join the Factions chat in-client.
  • When you're ready to play, you can either set up a match yourself, or join your faction's specific "looking for match" chat. (These are named, e.g., "Noxus", "Piltover", "Shurima".) Those chats are the first places people will look when setting up a match.
  • Today being Factions Friday, we'll make a special effort to get lots of matches going tonight starting at 5:00 Pacific time on the NA server.

If you have questions, feel free to post here.

This seems really interesting, but how does skins and stuff work? Do we pay you guys for skins like we do Rito? O-o (I must know, I am obsessed with skins.)
