FACTIONS: A Community Run Game-Mode!

Hi, Raptor here.

Lets be real - lore isn't really Riot's priority when it comes to League of Legends. Sure, sometimes they release some REALLY good lore, but do you ever wonder about other things? We know what champions do, but what about the Factions these Champions work for? Have you ever wanted to see Bilgewater fight against Ionia in League Matches? Ever wanted to see Demacia and Zaun clash in combat, OUTSIDE of the Fields of Justice?

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you: http://leaguefactions.net, A Fan-Made, Community run game-mode where Factions fight against each other, and people give a damn about lore.

Some Highlights of Factions include:

  • Signing up for one of 2-6 Factions, then going to the Fields of Justice to fight for them!
  • Interactive Lore Events, where you and your fellow Factions members can Influence events!
  • The ability to play with people of higher and lower elo!

How exactly does it work? Do people just organize games in the lobby or is there some sort of high authority that plans events?

It's very much a lobby system, only tournament games and featured matches are made by admins

So, could I just go into the lobby, say "Hey, I want to do a Zaun vs Demacia game and grab randoms to play with/against?" And last question, is the void an available faction? I assume so but one can never be too sure.

Pretty much. At any given time there's a certain story arc going on with anywhere from 2-5 factions involved. People declare for a Faction, and can organize matches for those factions to fight each other. And yes, the Void is certainly a Faction to play as, along with the Shadow Isles.

Both! People organize games in the chat lobby, and those games contribute to each faction's influence rating. The influence rating affects the progression of the lore, with pivotal moments being determined by special admin-run tournaments.

Even if your MMR is the pits, you can still vote which direction your faction should go when major decisions come up. I like Factions a lot; it deepens the League universe quite a bit.

DawnPaladin has it right. It all makes more sense once you get playing, but I'll try to provide some more detail below.

Factions is organized into storylines, chapters, arcs, or whatever you want to call them. Each one lasts about three months, and features a different set of playable factions. We select which factions will appear in each arc primarily through a public poll — on that note, if you haven't already, please cast your vote for which factions you want for the upcoming sixth arc. Match outcomes (whether formal tournaments or casual pickups) influence the course the story takes. The charts on the Previous Storylines page show the balance of power (scoreboard) for each arc.

During an arc, there are effectively two types of matches:

  • Arc matches. These can be pick-ups or formal tournaments. Anyone can start a scored pick-up match anytime. Match results are submitted online for scoring. Champion lists are arc-dependent, with factions often beginning with a small roster and unlocking new Champions through victories in games or lore events.
  • Unscored ("intermission") matches. If people don't want to play a scored match, they're free to set up a non-scored just-for-fun match between any two factions.

We're currently in "intermission" between arcs. Since there's no active storyline right now, only intermission matches are available.

Why the long intermission? Mostly so that we can revise our policies and lay out our game plan for next arc. It's also a fun way for people to try out the various factions and get to know each other.

I'll try to head on over tomorrow, sometime. Not exactly sure yet however.

One question: When gnar comes out, which faction is he going to join? I'm supposing that he joins bandle, since he's a yordle.

No official decision yet, but yeah, probably Bandle City.

The next arc will involve the exploration of a new continent. I'm toying with the idea of the factions discovering Gnar's cave on that continent.

True story. It's a real cool way to inject the Summoners back into the world of LoL. They even have their own small Lore team that puts out some pretty sweet content, as well as "novelizing" the big faction fights that affect the "story".

hello sounds kewl but one problem i think

i hear that their are raptors on staf in factions

i am very scared raptors are hungry and have sharp teeth and i think they were in a movie about dinosaurs which i saw as a little kid and i had nightmares actually i still do lol not really laughing though because its very scary

pls is it true there are raptors why would cupcaketrap have a killer dinosar on staff that sounds dangerous

I very much recommend this system for people that like this kind of thing (and aren't extremely competitive), but I have to say.

The ability to play with lower ELO people, is not, in the vast majority of cases, anything close to a benefit.

The admins try to balance the matches so that each team has a bronze/silver/gold/plat/diamond. CupcakeTrap and the others work really hard to make it as balanced as it can be.

This is contrary to my personal experience when I was playing in Factions, but I guess things have changed since then.

For big weekend tournaments and featured matches, we take care to mirror-balance the teams.

For pick-up matches, we strongly encourage people to balance the teams out, but it's ultimately up to the players involved.

Speaking of balance, one of my major intermission projects is to run some more stats and figure out a good formula for balancing mixed-rank teams.
