[Champion Concept] Malachi, Soldier of the Forge

Hello there, fellow Summoners. I am Captain Wednesday, and I would like to present to you my champion concept, Malachi, Soldier of the Forge.

Inspiration: Malachi is a combination of a couple thoughts I've had about the League. The first being that the blacksmith in the current League is a terrible representation. Poppy is a small Yordle lass. Not exactly the ideal image of a blacksmith. I'm all for women being just as tough as men, but in this case it doesn't feel right. Secondly, I realized that Draven has no true rival. For being the most self-concerning, narcissistic megalomaniac in the League, no one really despises him. Even his much more serious brother, Darius is rivals with his counterpart, Garen. Malachi is aimed to be Draven's rival. You can read more about that in the Lore.

Appearance: Malachi is a tall, muscular man with grizzled features as he is a blacksmith and former soldier. He is black haired and brown eyed. He is a very serious man, always standing up straight and speaking with conviction, like any good Demacian would. His right arm is made entirely of metal and he wears old Demacian around the rest of his body. Upon using his ultimate, Malachi will flip down his helmet's mask (which would probably be a different style with varying skins).

Overview: Malachi is a Fighter-Tank who specializes in sustained combat through removing an enemy's armor and increasing his own. Because Malachi steals percentage armor, he is strong against heavy armored tanks such as Rammus, Malphite, Shen, Taric, and Garen. However, because Welding Blade and Metallurgy require Malachi to perform on-hit basic attacks, champions with blinds and blocks are effective against him such as Jax, Pantheon, Teemo, and Quinn. He is also weak against mages with heavy magic burst damage, as Malachi focuses on Armor, rather than Magic Resistance.

Lore: Recruited into the Demacia military at a young age, Malachi and his brother, Samael, were but lowly cadets when Demacia and Noxus were at war. Far before the League, Demacia and Noxus waged countless battles and skirmishes that scoured Valoran. During these darker times, Malachi and Samael lost their father. He was a blacksmith, and after refusing to make a weapon for a Noxian soldier, he was brutally knifed in the back. Filled with ambition to avenge their father, the two boys set out to fight in the war. It was during this time Malachi would lose not only himself, but his brother as well.
It all seemed so simple. Repel some bloodthirsty Noxian invaders from a Demacian settlement in the Ironspike Mountains. That was the mission briefing for the Demacian 107th Infantry, the division Malachi and Samael served. The two brothers eagerly awaited their arrival to their destination. The mountains were a harsh place, especially for two young boys, but the two inseparable brothers marched on in the icy hills. Upon reaching the Demacian settlement, all seemed well. The residents welcomed the soldiers and provided them with plenty of food, drink, and even imported Freljord Poro-Snax. All seemed well for the two, until that same night.
Everyone was sleeping when the roar of fire tore through the town. Screams from the town guard issued warnings of Noxians at the front gate. By the time Malachi and Samael reached the gate in their battle gear, fire had nearly destroyed the entire wall. Loud thumping could be heard just beyond the nearly ruined gate door. The Noxians had a battering ram and the question became not if they would break the door, but when. Before the Demacian troops could form a line, the gate swung open. Noxians, clad in their skull helmets and jet black armor, poured into the town. Malachi and Samael held off plenty of the invaders until a strange figure appeared from them. Not a garden variety soldier, but a smaller man, with tattoos across his arms and no armor on his body. From behind him he pulled out two large axes with a handle on each of them. With a maniacal laugh, he launched one of the axes at a Demacian soldier who fell to the ground upon the axe's impact. Issuing another laugh, the figure raced toward his foe, grabbing his axe that had flown into the air. Samael launched at the figure, infuriated with the man's audacity despite Malachi's orders. The figure danced around Malachi's brother's attacks, seemingly effortlessly. The figure darted away from Samael, praising the Demacian for his show of valor. And then, to Malachi's horror, the figure launched an axe directly at Samael, tearing a massive hole into Samael's chest as the axe flew back to the figure.
Malachi yelled in sorrow as his brother's scarred body fell limp upon the snow. The figure laughed and mocked Malachi. Consumed with rage and shock, Malachi charged at the figure. With a smile on his face and blood on his hands, the figure sent both of his axing flying toward Malachi, ripping the ground apart as the went. Realizing what he was doing, Malachi attempted to dodge the blades, but it was too late. As the axes raced passed him, they took his right arm with them. Falling down in agony, Malachi demanded the figure's name. The man simply laughed and kicked Malachi into unconsciousness. As Malachi slowly slipped away, he heard the figure chant his own name to the moon. Malachi suddenly awoke in a laboratory. He quickly stood up to find something different about him. His right arm was heavier than before. Looking at the abnormality, all he saw was glossy, shined metal. From the far wall, a scientist walked into the room. He welcomed Malachi back and that a group of Piltover scientists had rebuilt his arm out of the strongest metal in Runeterra. Confused and angry, Malachi quickly departed the facility to Demacia. After being informed about his long catatonic deep sleep and the formation of the League of Legends, Malachi swore he would train and join the League.
Returning to his home in the city-state of Demacia, Malachi took up smithing, just like his father. Forging an unbreakable buckler and creating a massive blade with the capability to shred an enemy's defenses, Malachi made the journey to the Institute of War. He swore revenge on his brother's executioner.
Upon entering the Institute's doors, he uttered but one name. Draven.

"Wartime in Demacia may have ended, but my hatred for Noxus never will." - Eugene Malachi, Soldier of the Forge

  • Taunt to Enemy Darius: "Your brother took my life from me, now I'll take his from you."
  • Approaching Allied Darius: "We may fight alongside one another today, but I'm taking you down tomorrow."

  • Taunt to Enemy Draven: "I'm taking you down Draven. And no one's goin' miss you."
  • Joke near Enemy Draven: "Your axes look duller than before, Draven. You gettin' lazy?"
  • Approaching Allied Draven: "You don't deserve my company, executioner!"

Skin Concepts:

  • Scalesmith Malachi: Forged from the scales of mighty dragons, slain by Valoran's greatest heroes, Malachi created suits of armor from the winged demons. With these relics of old, maybe Valoran will have a chance against the dragons' hellfire. (Special thanks to doggytreat171 for the inspiration)
  • Noxus Malachi: On the night his brother was slain, a part of Malachi died as well. His love for his home faded. His purpose for Demacia, gone. He would fight for those with true power from now on. With him, Noxus would rise.

That's about all I have. Please, feel free to post comments, suggestions, and questions regarding Malachi below. It was a lot of fun writing the lore and kit for Malachi, so please discuss things about him below. Thanks for reading!

I like the idea of having a blacksmith champ and how you incorporated his theme into his gameplay. I feel his Q applying on hit effects can be a bit of a balance issue, and if the shield reduces mana cost, the base cost mana should be higher. His shield seems like a more selfish version of Galio's shield, which is cool, but Riots already demonstrated their frustration over this healing shield. I think the Rampage ability is classified as a PBAOE, or an AOE effect coming from the champ. His ult is a true tank ability and is interesting, Reminds me of Nasus and Renekton ult. Lore and idea;s are great. Keep it up!

Funny you posted a rival to Darius and Draven, I posted my take on Atma at the same time.

The first link is lore, here's the actual champ concept.

I love it. But a problem, I thought Draven was just an executioner, true he was a soldier at first, but wouldn't that make him just a child in service like Malachi at the time of the lore? How old would it make Draven?

Besides the obvious Dragonslayer skin, I suggest a: Mariachi Malachi skin. :D
