Death Recap 2.0 Suggestion [including Example Layouts]

To prevent confusion: I've copied the thread from the other forums NA/EUW

Now in Version 2.2

Recent Changes:
v.2.2
General:

  • Removed "Show CC" Button.
    This is now activated permanently.
  • "Physical Damage", "Magical Damage" and "True Damage" returned as "P", "M" and "T".
Without using too much space this should bring back the advantages of having them.
  • Mixed Damage is now sorted by amount of their respective values.
  • "Sum up Same" and "Sum up DoTs" Buttons have switched their places. In addition "Sum up DoTs" subordinated to "Sum up Same". If you activate "Sum up Same" you cannot deactivate "Sum up DoTs". But you can still have "Sum up DoTs" activated while "Sum up Same" is deactivated.
I can understand that those options seem to be almost the same. However the option to sum up only Damage over Time effects is still valueable because you can still differ between Basic Attacks and DoTs like Lizard Buff or Elder Lizard.
  • DoTs have now their active time displayed as a second time value when "Sum up DoTs" is active in a Sorted by Time View.
  • Additional Information: Hovering over a summarized DoT-Value will highlight the respective field and the corresponding field.
  • Similiar to DoTs the active time of CC is now displayed as two time values (in a Sorted by Time View). Many CCs have different duration with their ranks. Thus I included additional timestamps for them as well. However they don't receive a second field for the end.
Maybe I have to come up with another solution. Longer words like "Silence" or "Knocked Up" can cause overlapping in the champion View.
  • Minions are now summarized by default.
The huge amount of single hits have the possibility to destroy this Death Recap in terms of straightforwardness.

Champion View:

  • Total Damage per Champion is now listed vertically and sorted by amount.
This should improve the readability of this section.

Timeline View:

  • The Timeline View is now locked in "Sort Damage by: Time"
  • The Sections of the Timeline View are now distributed equally over the width of the window.
  • The killing blow will never be summarized. (only in Timeline View)
Sometimes a minion or a DoT will kill you. Thus even with the activated "Sum up Same" and "Sum up DoTs" the killing blow will be displayed as a single hit.

The Death Recap has always been a useful and important tool for ingame analyzing. However the recap is currently outdated (and was always, sadly). Aside the fact that the reset timer bugs most of the time the amount of data is very limited. 3 rows and 3 columns aren't even close enough. Especially when the amount of damage done is almost equal of each champion. Thus I decided to make a suggestion for a new recap.

To address the problems with the space I started to remove the words "Physical Damage" and "Magic Damage" which were always wrote next to the amount of damage dealt. Those words consume almost 40% of the total space. Thus I removed them. Currently physical, magical and true damage all have their own colors in the recap. Why do we have to wrote them within the recap? It is possible that new players won't assign the colors to the respective damage types. Thus I included he "Total Damage Overview". Basically it is the same as the overview which is currently ingame but now with more details. Additionally, for less mental arithmetic, I added total damage values for each champions.

The tips against the champions were removed and will possibly be available through tooltips or are removed completely. Another possible option are individual tooltips for each ablity, allowing new players to learn specific abilities faster. In addition the abilities should have a tooltip which is the same to the players ability tooltip who used that ability.

The next important thing is the time. In many situations I don't realize what exactly killed me because either the projectile was invisible, the damage was dealt over time or the screen was too flashy. Thus I included timestamps to visualize the impact of damage. To evolve this furthermore I added another layout which is sorted by time.

While speaking of time, there are two situations where is no time to look into the death recap: a) in the early game with fast respawn timer and b) when I didn't die. Especially with the new layout and new informations there is a possibility that the people can't look fast enough through the death recap. Thus I suggest that the death recap is always available. Furthermore it should be renamed into "Damage Recap" and be accessible through a button (similar to the scoreboard).

List of stuff that is different from the old recap:

  • Recap is divided into 5 columns. If more sources participated their columns will be accessible via a scroll bar at the bottom of the recap.
  • Added Total Damage overview (also for each champion)
  • Information "How to counteract against champions" moved into tooltips.
  • Timestamps were been added. (The white number with the format "ss.00".
  • The recap is switchable between two layouts (Damage by champions and damage by time).
  • Damage shielded is now visualized through numbers in brackets.
  • Damage Recap is available while alive.

The amount of time which is displayed in the damage recap should be calculated like this: Every time a champion receives damage a reset-timer restarts. After (5 seconds + 1 second for each 20% HP missed) the timer ends and the damage recap is stopped. The next damage source will delete the whole recap and start a fresh one. Casting "Recall" will stop the timer. Finishing "Recall" will immediately end the timer and the recap. Cancelling "Recall" will continue the timer.

Maybe you guys also have some ideas what can be improved in addition to everything I addressed here.

Edit 1: Something I have forgotten: With the evolution around replays and shoutcasting I would also suggest to make the death recap available for replay watcher and live shoutcaster. Appendix: It makes me feel glad to see that everybody want this design and support this thread.

Edit 2: Various Comments which also could be included:

Thinks_Too_Logically via reddit:
Another consideration: removing the "magical" and "physical" words from the damage numbers can negatively impact colorblind people. There's probably a way to solve this through font changes based on type of damage or colorblind mode impacting the death recap UI.

** Edit 3**: Update to version 2.1

This is something that hit me a moment ago. I've read in the comments that some people wished for the switch between the old recap and the new one. I thought a bit on this and thus I included the "Sum up Same" button which will sum up everything that is the same, obviously. With this everybody can manage their view of the recap personally. In addition I added the bottom scrollbar if more than 5 sources are present. Lastly I made a second picture which will show the default view which you will see on your first death. Surely, preferences will be saved through multiple deaths and sessions.

Edit 4: We got a Red Post!

FeralPony dropped down to leave some feedback <3. EUW Link

Edit 5: Update to version 2.2

I took some feedback and worked it into the new version.

Older Changes:
v.2.1

  • New "Sum up Same" Button.
With it and in combination with the "Sum up DoTs" Button you can "simulate" the current version of the death recap.

The old versions remain as additional attachments.

+1 Really well thought out.

He's done the layout work for you. Tell your programmers to get off their butts and implement this already!

I love the enthusiasm but I do want to say that in my 2 years at Riot, I've met anyone here that I would ever describe as lazy, not even on their worst day, on any team, let alone our programmers. "Riot lazy" is the pinnacle of industriousness compared to every other place I've worked. We might not always get everything right, but we can't blame that on a lack of passion or effort.

You're right! You're also MASSIVELY over-reacting.

I was very sleepy and hungry when I read the comment. Humor receptors were not activated. Riot Girl Fail.

Please we really need a new death recap... When Garen uses mystic shot on me for 1000 magic damage, there is something wrong...

CupcakeTrap8 votes

Great work!

For me, my biggest gripe about the current death recap is that it's not clear what timespan it covers.

The main data I look for: what % physical, what % magic. Those are the most crucial missing variables in optimization calculations.

RiotRiot Girl8 votes

Yeah, timespan would be super helpful.

Sorry but that's just a disaster of too much, and poorly laid out information. League desperately needs a new death recap but this just spams the user with technical information. The death recap needs to be quick and easy to see and understand in a glance. I hope they look at Dawngate for inspiration. Dawngate's piechart for damage was so refreshing and easy to understand.

ZanryuEU2 votes

Instead of saying that everything is bad, you should provide some suggestions instead without copy-pasting from another game. I see that Dawngate's Death Recap is different but it doesn't suite LoL's philosophy of helping new players to understand the game faster.
Then against what technical information? First, everything that contribute to your champion's death is listed instead of a maximum of 3 sources per enemy.
Secondly, and this is something most people don't understand, there are different types of options so that each player can adjust the death recap for their own needs. My default view is actually the same as the current recap except that everything is listed instead of the limited view.
And then again everything in this suggestion is addressed to provide more information. The core informations like how much damage of what types are listed together and players who are experienced with this layout don't need to look at every single detail but instead look for the important numbers.

I agree with most of what you're saying, but what's wrong with a pie chart? I think that's actually a pretty reasonable way to show magic/physical damage at a glance. You can scale the size of the pies to show total damage from each source. That'd be quite readable.

Zanryu1 votes

The problem of a pie chart is not the readability or the fact that it is easy to understand but rather the space it consumes. The problem of a graphical display is to determine the amount of space each statistic may consume in terms of readability.
I hold the opinion that a pie chart is fairly clunky and a text can provide the same amount of information in less space.
On the other hand it is easily possible to include a pie chart in an extra window tab. However neither it provide any new information nor is it more helpful than the regular text.
Another problem with a pie chart is the fact, especially with the example of Dawnguard, that you have to hover with the mouse over the chart to gain your information, which consumes time. Additionally if we need to compress the recap due to its size the tooltip of the pie chart will overlap other information.

CupcakeTrap2 votes

Personally, I value a quick assessment of percentage over specific numbers. To me, it's more meaningful that "about two-thirds of damage was physical" or "Darius did way more damage than Riven" than that "Darius did exactly 732 points of physical damage".

A bar graph might be better than a pie chart space-wise, though. A bar graph can fit into the same space as text: just replace the line of text with a bar of similar height. You could add 100-hp and 1000-hp notches analogous to the health meter.

Zanryu1 votes

The first problem with this can be quite destructive. Unlike Dawnguard, I'm not sure because I've only looked at a few pictures, LoL has multiple types of damage: 3. But the point is that neither in a pie chart nor in a bar you can determine exact values, especially if all 3 damage types are roughly equal. It may be the case that some people can see differences but not everybody. And you already stated it: "To me, it's more meaningful". In a big game like League of Legends designers can't approach every need. They have to make a version that suites for most of the players.
And in my eyes an expansion of the current one is the best way to solve this. Players won't need to learn to read something different and if they want something else there are 3rd party tools for example, like LSI.

So this is a genuine request for clarification.

You prefer Option One to Option Two? When I look at Option One, I find myself just trying to mentally convert it to Option Two.

#####Option One 913 P
291 M

Pingu
504 P
291 M

Penguin Slide
504 P

Arctic Chill
291 M

Averdrian
321 P

Tagteam: Urf
321 P

Purple Caster Minions
88 P

#####Option Two P: [-][-][-][-][-][-][-][-][-]
M: (-)(-)(-)

Pingu
P: [-][-][-][-][-]
M: (-)(-)(-)

Penguin Slide
P: [-][-][-][-][-]

Arctic Chill
M: (-)(-)(-)

Averdrian
P: [-][-][-]

Tagteam: Urf
P: [-][-][-]

Purple Caster Minions

EDIT: Also, on reflection, I think %P/%M/%T stats would be helpful. I'm just too lazy to add them above.

I have to agree with CupcakeTrap. Having a quick and easy way to see what damage is being done is more valuable to me than detailed information during the chaos of a fight, and reading all of the detailed information takes more time than it's really worth. Also, if you want detailed info, then it seems like the solution would be to display those values on mouse-over. While I'm not an expert on any of this by any means, it seems to me that if you really want to accommodate everyone, you could just make pie charts/bar graphs on option instead of having one or the other. Thanks for the effort that you're putting into this! ^_^

You could have a piechart as the default setting, for basic information. I died to 80% physical dmg from Caitlyn, maybe I should deal Randuins. If I really want to look at it I click one of the options you have so kindly placed on the side.

exec32 votes

I get that you're upset that somebody didn't like your baby, one that you spent a lot of effort on but it's not a good layout. When I see your pics I see tons of READING. You can't ask people to pull out a book and start reading in the middle of a match, no not even late game when the timers are long though that's ignoring early game where you simply won't even have the time to read through all that stuff in the first place (though imo you should be able to check your previous death recap after you spawn).

You ask for suggestions yet I gave one, a Piechart. I agree with Cupcaketrap. This information needs to be easily recognizable at a glance. A Piechart that's 60% magic damage is telling me i'm taking mostly magic damage, grab some MR. A very thorough and long list of abilities with a ton of different numbers for damage dealt that borderline asks me to pull out the calculator doesn't tell me squat.

Your system overloads the player with information, much of which isn't very useful. I don't need to know what each individual ability does, I need to know the totals and I need to know what CC I suffered in as efficient a way as possible, your lists are not efficient nor manageable to sift through for the vast majority of players.

And I disagree with the mouse over, at the least mousing over the Piechart for the exact damage numbers is effortless compared to your lists of damage and abilities used (also yours requires some clicking if you're flipping between the different options).

Your design is born from the desire to fill the death recap with every piece is information humanly possible when a lot of that information is redundant and not necessary in the first place (as nice as listed shielded damage is how exactly would that information change my next purchase? I guess in part it depends on whether the current death recap states how much damage you actually got dealt or how much was thrown at you as if you were getting hit by both physical and magical a Black Shield could skew things to look like you were getting hit by more physical).

I agree Death recap needs a redo but it needs to be made simpler, not more complex.

Daeyn1 votes

I think this would be amazing to have! The current death recap is much too vague and doesn't cover enough of the skills that have been cast on you. With a death recap as detailed as this I feel like people will be less frustrated when they die, being able to see exactly what happened.

MrBuffington1 votes

This is really cool, you do a pretty good job of making all the information available for people who want it, while still making it pretty accessible for when you just want a quick glance at what actually killed you. I'm wondering if you've looked at sorting by greatest source of damage, also if this information could be available in Match History or something (since I usually don't have that much time during death to look at all the numbers, I mostly glance over to see what sort of resistances I should be building or who I should avoid fighting).

Drogeist1 votes

I agree that something has to be done with death recap. By far my biggest issue with it now is that it hardly ever shows all the damage that killed me, and so I can't use it for what it's primarily meant for: figuring out what defensive items to buy.

Best example: It correctly showed that I took a whopping 4120 dmg in 4.8 seconds. However, when I added up the 3 columns, the total was about 1500 with an entire column devoted to 160 (yes 160!) dmg done by minions. It's clear that, even with the 3 column system, something needs to be done to at least ensure that the biggest sources of total damage are summarized. I'd much rather know about the 2000 dmg from Vayne than the 160 from those caster minions!

Yes, currently, since 4.17, the Death Recap is really messed up. Could be a hint towards possible changes.
