Hai isn't a bad jungler, and in fact that is where he started. He most likely went mid because everyone thought his shot calling would fit in there, and to make room for Meteos. The only insane thing about it is if hai can make it work. His spring split sucked

Doesn't matter which role shot calls as long as they have extreme map awareness and are able to keep track of multiple lanes. It's just easiest to do from jungle.
