How come World Champions didn't make it out of C9 and VIT group?

My interest in e-sports has been close to none last few years so my Pick'em decisions were based on really limited knowledge. When I found out that this Gen.G thingie is actually Samsung Galaxy, I considered the western teams done.

Can someone explain to me why the last year's Worlds' victorious, 3-0ing roster didn't make it out of the group stage with a poor score of 1-5?

According to casters SSG OR GenG's playstyle was hold off till mid/late and crush ppl under superior teamfighs with the adc dmg.

Teams are forcing fights when they use to be more passive.

The koreans couldnt process the western memes. Na thrives in chaos and kr got sucked into it. C9 made them play a less controlled game and they diddnt know how to handle it and vit did the same.

I don't even know why Gen G had a different jungler than Ambition to start! Ambition has saved Gen G numerous times even being the Bengi to Gen G themselves, winning them regional games, playoffs, Worlds etc - 55.357% win % for the jungler that replaced Ambition 63.29% win % for Ambition when these junglers start games

However, you also have to remember that Gen G sucked in the Spring Split having Worlds hangover, per se.

GEN G were more aggressive in 2017 Kills 2017 Spring Split 12.1 kills Deaths 9.0 Kills 2017 Summer Split 9.9 kills Deaths 8.8

  • They got worse in the 2018 Summer Split Kills 2018 Summer Split 8.6 kills Deaths 7.9

Towers taken was something GEN G also sucked in compared to their previous splits Towers 2017 Spring Split 7.9 Towers lost 4.5 Towers 2017 Summer Split 7.6 Towers lost 5.2 Towers 2018 Summer Split 6.7 Towers lost 4.6

Barons again, another low point 2017 Spring Split 0.98 Barons per game 2017 Summer Split 0.75 Barons per game 2018 Summer Split 0.64 Barons per game

Gen G's journey took a "San Antonio Spurs" type of end - having lost the Finals against the best team in the World(LeBron James Heat -Faker SKT) only to comeback and beat the best team in the Finals a year later. The next year losing in the first round(Groups) against teams like VIT/C9(Clippers).

Casing point - Gen G's slow methodical style got beat by more aggressive meta style type of teams. Hard to win like that these days in both LCS/Pro scene and in solo Q.

Xayah got banned out 3 times in which Gen G played her once in which teams made it a priority to ban such champion that helped GEN G win games Ruler as Xayah is 15 of 23 in the LCK splits, playoffs, Worlds and regional games with stats such as 93 kills - 25 deaths and 81 assists but 3/6 banned with also Cuvee's Aatrox in which he was having success on in which it was banned 3 out of 6 also with Gen G won there only game off the Aatrox, as well as RNG playing the Aatrox themselves - Winning against GEN G By the way

Gen G were always a very slow paced team, sacrificing the minimum through the early and mid game to rally and win in the late game with better scaling and macro play. Last year's Ardent Censer meta fit them perfectly. This year, in a much faster meta and against three teams that made a name for themselves off of brawling and diving, they couldn't ever manage to hold on to reach that point. With games being so much faster and snowbally than they were last year, they just got trampled in every game.
