2015 Worlds was NOT boring in ANY way.
There are a few people complaining that these worlds were boring. I don't feel like that is true. Sure the heavy favorite (though you could argue at the beginning EDG was a co-favorite) won, this is the type of thing that happens in sport, especially with a best of format. In fact, that is precisely the reason for a group stage and best of format afterwards, to weed out the team that get a string of luck or good/bad games (C9, Fanatic).
What this world showed was that the regions are not too far apart. NA, though they flamed out in the groups, was able to get some big wins. Eu showed they are even stronger than originally thought, the wildcards are beginning to catch up to the rest of the world, and China needs to stop importing so heavily because communication is key now that mechanical skills are evening out. Yes Korea dominated the playoffs, but it is nothing different from the Football World Cup, or any U.S. playoffs. You always see a European team winning the world cup (unless South America shows up that year), you have the same NBA teams rotating dynasties, etc. This doesn't make the games less exciting.
Some people cite the 3-0s and 3-1s, what they fail to mention is that most of the games were extremely close. There were some stomps sprinkled in, but that happens in any competitive format where teams fail to show up for that match (Brazil-Germany anyone?).
The rise of new stars during this worlds campaign was fantastic. Sneaky has shown he is a world class adc, as has Niels. Marin was owning the summer split in the LCK, but he truly emerged at worlds to take home the MVP. Smeb has done a 180 in terms of perception, outdueling the Korean LCK mvp ssumday. These guys are the future of league, along with some others. We're going to hear even more about them. Oh yeah, and Faker isn't gone, he was just resting.
Back to SKT and people hating the fact they ran through the tournament, they are not different from the Golden State Warriors, Barcelona, or the New England Patriots. They are dominant in a multi faceted way. They understand the current game strategy and can execute it, but also they have transcendent individual stars from Marin, Faker, to even their coaching staff. SKT actually has a story. It was touched upon briefly in the finals. They came from nothing to win the S3 world championships mostly because they were carried by Faker. However as S4 came along League of Legends evolved from a game that one person can just hard carry, it had become more strategic and more roles had a say in the outcome of the match. SKT still competed but the failed to qualify for worlds. That was an extreme disappointment. After S4, when most of the top Korean players left Korea, Faker stayed even though he was offered more money. He stayed because of loyalty and also he correctly felt that Korea was still the best region in the world. His loyalty was rewarded when his team came through the fire and formed a cohesive battle tested unit that no one in the world could seriously threaten. Besides Fanatic we have never seen such high level continuity in a team in this sport before (and SKT is even at another level).
Marin especially is a great storyline for this tournament. He was essentially getting carried by the rest of SKT before the summer split. Go and watch spring LCK matches or MSI and you'll see the difference in the way the casters talk about him. Faker was unable to carry them past EDG in the finals and the team learned from that. They are the perfect example of what you want in champions. They are always at the forefront of the meta, adapting and innovating, they out maneuver their opponents through sheer chemistry and strategy.
I do admit the analysts were not at top form. I found them entertaining but the way they rode SKT's jock the entire tournament was absurd. They should have come up with strategies with substance for the other team to beat SKT instead of "don't make any mistakes because they will punish them." They could've spoken more on how CJ beat them with a double teleport comp. Or EDG baited them in picks and bans to pick a carry they knew they could shut down. All the wrong picks during the first week was amusing.
TLDR: This worlds wasn't boring, the strategy and level of play shown by the teams is at an all time high. The world is catching up to Korea (maybe just not SKT). Most years in any sport there will be a dominant team, enjoy them because they will be a part of the sports history years from now.
