Daily esports tokens for upgrading icons

I enjoy following worlds, but I don't really care who wins, and therefore am not buying an icon. Is it worth buying these daily tokens? Am I able to upgrade the general 2016 worlds icon, or would it just be a waste of IP if I don't own a team icon?
