TFT Ranked - What are we doing for Set 2 Rise of the Elements?

Hey Tacticians!

With Rise of the Elements now out in the wild, and our first patch coming to a close, we wanted to highlight what you should expect from the next Teamfight Tactics ranked split when it kicks back off this week on patch 9.23. There’s three main things we wanted to cover:

  • We'll be hard resetting everyone’s **rank **down to Iron.
  • We'll be soft resetting everyone’s MMR.
  • Never losing LP for coming 4th

**Why a hard rank reset? **

For many of you, we know that progressing through the ladder as you master a game can be an incredibly satisfying period of time. We want to see if we can offer that entirely fresh ranked experience each time we release a new set. Given that we’ve introduced almost entirely new champions, spells, and strategies, we feel now is a good time to go for a big change, and gather feedback from players to see how it feels to inform future set releases. It’s worth noting that during placements - the first 5 ranked games you play on 9.23, you will not lose any LP regardless of how low you place so the sky's the limit if you win all 5!

Why a soft MMR reset?

While everyone kicking off their ranked split from the same rank is exciting, we still want the games at the start of the season to feel competitive and fair. We don't want someone totally new to ranked ending up in a game with all of you former challenger players, just like we don't want a challenger player finding themselves in a lobby with a bunch of players in Iron (and me). Since we’d changed SO much about the game however, we went with a soft reset to reflect the learning process we are all going through while maintaining the competitive nature of the queue. That being said, players who were high MMR in Set 1 can expect that they’ll progress through the ranks faster than those who were lower MMR. While we want your first games to be competitive, we also didn’t want it to feel like you were punished for doing well during set 1.

Never losing LP for coming 4th

One clear pain point from Set 1 that many of you brought to our attention was that it felt really bad to place 4th in a game, thinking you “won”, only to end up losing LP. These instances were rare, but when they happened they really felt shitty, so we wanted to make some improvements. In set 2, 4th place will now never result in an LP loss, but 5th place always will. We hope that this makes games where you make it to the top 4 feel more exciting, helps change the mindset that the only way to win is to come 1st, and it allows us to add some additional in game ceremony to help recognize your placement.

We’re super excited to watch you figure out the new strategies available in Rise of the Elements over the coming months! Please continue to give us feedback, it helped us build Rise of the Elements knowing confidently that we were moving in the right direction. You can read up on some of the other larger changes we've made here.

What will be the ranked reward for tft? I hope it's a little legend skin

Please for the sake of people who play TFT a LOT, please reward us with something more significant then an emote if you reach higher ranks. Or just a better reward. It makes playing TFT ranked feel underwhelming knowing you're just getting a half baked emote, even if you manage to get plat or even diamond plus. Getting anything above gold really doesnt matter.

Sooo... Consider a senario like this :

A Master player with Master MMR gets placed in a Master/GM MMR lobbies in all his placements and unfortunately lose all 5 of it, So he gets placed on iron after placements (since its a hard rank reset). Even though he is Iron he'll continue to play on Master MMR lobbies since its "Soft MMR reset" and struggle to climb from iron coz in my experience one cannot keep a long winstreak on high elos(High diamond onwards).

Correct me if im wrong but does any of this sounds fair to u???? Specially the Master player who gets placed on Iron?

Hey RiotMaple!

I just wanted to ask a question about if TFT will also be getting splits for the ranked season? Also approximately how often will sets change (Quarterly, Yearly, etc)?

We'll be hard resetting everyone’s rank down to Iron. We'll be soft resetting everyone’s MMR.

You realize that's not how ranked ladders are supposed to work, right?

I was plat in S1. Now, I'll have to beat other people who were in plat in S1 order to get out of Bronze in S2. How the hell does that make sense? How is that not punishing me for doing well last season? And why miss-lead about progressing faster? Anyone higher ranked may earn more LP per victory, but the soft reset means they will have fewer victories than if there was a hard reset or MMR, so you are progressing at the same rate.

Soft reset of one and hard reset of the other introduces a disconnect between a players mastery of the game and their visible rank until they have played a large number of matches. Those matches aren't fun, it doesn't capture the feel of progressing again, it feels more like spending 8 hours in a single player game then having to start over because the power went out and you forgot to save.

I'd just like to add to the chorus of people who don't like the way rank was hard set to Iron with a soft reset MMR.

I just played a game as Silver 4 against: Gold 3, Gold 3, Plat 2, Plat 2, Plat 3, Silver 3 and a guy who shows as Grandmaster last set.

I finished last set D4 after 85 games. Why even bother with a rank when it means absolutely nothing? Just show me my ELO like back in the day in LoL. Like it's just the wild west right now where you can't gauge someone's skill by their rank at all. It's utterly pointless and it makes the climb feel like a massive slog.

So do LP gains reflect the actual MMR?

How long will the Rise of the Elements TFT Pass be available for? Also how many points do i need to earn all the rewards? You guys have given this info before when announcing passes, but its not there for this pass. I think this should always be included when a new pass is announced, so people can plan, if they want all the rewards.

Will there be ranked rewards for silver in tft?

So basically, I have to play a crap ton of games just to get back to my former rank? I don't really want to have to play a ton of games just to get back where I ended up last season. I don't have all day every day to play TFT.

Is the Woodland bug going to be addressed at any time?

ReeveNL12/28/2019, 1:29:17 PM1 votes

Hi MapleNectar,

I just wanted to reply to this "Never loosing LP for coming 4th". Because I've had around 3 matches where I became 4th and I DID loose LP.

Is this still suppose to be the case or has there been an update where you simply do loose LP when there's lower ranked people in your lobby?

Thanks in advance!

we wanted to highlight what you should expect from the next Teamfight Tactics ranked split when it kicks back off this week on patch 9.23.

But according to the Twitter and Meddlers comment in the other thread, patch 9.23 is a three week patch, which would mean it's not live till next week. So, which is it?

Please fix the ambiguous grammar in the Electric description. Right now it reads as if the nearby units are the ones triggering the electric proc. It should read like: Whenever an Electric unit deals or receives a critical strike, it shocks nearby enemy unitsOrnn
