Vision Ping

BTW THE ART, AUDIO, AND ESPECIALLY TEXT IS SUPER WIP

Without further ado…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kiHQeCSLsR4

Hey all, we want to take this as an opportunity to be a bit more open about our dev process, so let’s dive into some details:

Why now, why not before?

  • We’ve been pretty torn between wanting to add new functionality and preserving the ease of use of the current cardinal wheel. For now we want to sidestep these concerns by adding a low-scope hotkey bind, and have the ping wheel conversation after this is done.

  • Every team is trying to deliver stuff as quickly as possible, but there are a plenty of ideas that don't fit easily into an existing effort (which makes it harder to prioritize against everything else we're working on). It's surprisingly tough to do, but we're trying to get better at pulling our heads up and looking for areas that we’re missing. In this case we felt strongly about adding the ping, so we decided to take a few days away from our normal day to day to take a first pass at this.

What’s left?

  • Art: We’re going to make a few passes at the in-game particle effect and minimap icon before sending it on to PBE.

  • Audio: We’re doing some iterations on sound effects and, just like with the visuals, are trying to make sure it communicates its purpose while keeping it distinct from all the other ping sounds.

  • Terminology: Minor point, but one worth calling out. We’re going to put a lot of forethought into exactly what words we use. We don’t want to constrain this ping’s use by priming people with any specific language (ie Ward). It’ll probably be used to indicate the placement of a ward 90% of the time, but we don’t want players to hesitate also using it for things like Ashe’s Hawkshot or Teemo’s Noxious Trap.

This is due to hit PBE in a couple of patches (7.14 or 7.15), and we’ll keep ya’ll up to date with how things progress!

We'll be around for any question ya'll might have, NoopMoney, Rayven, Riot Asyrite, Haga, Vonderhamz

Is it necessary to have a yellow "caution" ping as well as a red "danger" ping? They seem pretty interchangeable to me, couldn't the warded ping replace one of those?

xScarfy6 votes

To me the yellow “caution“ ping acts as a “better don't go there“ or “fall back“, while the red “danger“ ping just tells that there (possibly) are enemies/other dangers at the pinged location, so one doesn't get caught unexpected and can decided whether its a good idea to go in or to better fall back.

EternalFrostFire1 votes

For me 1 or 2 danger pings or missing pings, or a mix of both means that there could be danger there/coming. Whereas me spamming danger danger, is me shouting DANGER DANGER FCKING GET OUT OF THERE YOU BRONZE NOOB. So yeah, I never bother to use the fall back ping.

Solash6 votes

So how long until my teammates starting spamming this ping on my corpse?

Leyrann6 votes

What does it matter which ping they spam?

gotta bind it to V for vision :p

Have you considered adding a "please place a ward here" ping? I think it's near the same level of utility.

DeathBurst4 votes

You don't need two different pings for that. You can express what you want with "Vision ping + Help me ping". But the text should remain general enough to allow this.

Just ping the trinket and blue ping, most people understand it

when im out of ward charges, i ping my trinkets cooldown then i use a normal blue ping where i would like teamates to place a ward. I've never tried it in ranked (cause i am NOT touching that place) but ive gotten my lane buddys to ward alot more than they used to.

I am begging you to keep the " the enemy can see this shit " It's perfect.

jadelink5 votes

A request, please let the icons linger for longer. Junglers involved ina fight in mid REALLY still want to know where bot wards, they just cant afford to look at bot lane while leblanc is trying to kill ahri infront of their face.

10 seconds sounds reasonable.

DeathBurst2 votes

This is actually a very sensible remark.

SARMIENTO671 votes

10 seconds is way too long. imagine having teammates spam the shit out of this to the point where you gotta ping mute them. In a huge teamfight having that symbol spammed can get in the way and those fights don't last 10 seconds.

Just a small request:

Don't change the Chat message!

I know you will but i've had my say. PG12 but this is League we're talking about. :)

This is a great step in improving communication. Any knowledge on how the voice comms are coming?

RiotRiot MapleNectar3 votes

Sadly that's far outside of the scope we were looking at for this project :P. We merely wanted to be a quick strike team that could get in, do some high value work, then go back to the day to day. Very little personal insight into Voice Comms work, sorry dude!

That's cool! I used the g-v keybindings long before the wheel came along. In fact, I don't think I know of very many ways to bring up the wheel without them. Would there be any way of removing one of wheel's interaction and replacing it with another?

RiotNoopMoney4 votes

For now there aren't any plans to change the current ping wheel. We hope to give this some UI down the line, whether that's putting it in the current wheel, another one, or someplace else, we don't know yet.

Atanchan4 votes

Something I think would work would be to take a cue from DOTA 2's chat wheel, where each player has their own ping wheel that can be loaded with whatever pings they want at whatever position they'd want them.

It's not quite a one-to-one solution, since I doubt there'll be anywhere near the amount of pings as there are chat messages in doto, but even with that it'd certainly be a QoL change for players transitioning from other games with similar systems ( iirc the default position of the adaptive "Missing!" message in doto is literally on the exact opposite side of the wheel )

There is Ping Retreat and Ping Danger which does exactly the same thing

Replace Danger with Warded

That's exactly what I was thinking. Why not make the wheel customizable with the pings you want the most? (danger, careful, warded, ward here, ect) that way you can communicate freely.

So glad we're finally getting a ping for enemy intel zones.

Big thank you to everyone who is working on it!

YES THANK YOU RIOT

DeathBurst2 votes

If possible, the text should remain as general as possible.

For instance, this new Ping + an Assist me ping could mean "go ward over there", and the text should allow that too.

DeathBurst1 votes

Example of possible text: "Vision here!"

Garrotte1 votes

I'm worried that the "iterations on sound effects" means "make it less annoying". Are there any plans to make sure that the ? ping and the warded ping's sound don't overlap during spam?

RiotRiot MapleNectar4 votes

We're going to be making sure the ping sounds distinct from the others in game. The wonderful Vonderhamz is our audio bro who's working actively on that :)

I think the ping people are looking for is "place a ward here", it's such a shame that after so much wait, this still doesn't really deliver.

DeathBurst1 votes

It will deliver. Even if they don't make the text more generic (which I hope they will), people don't really care about the text, just see how they are using the "question mark" pink.

Cosnirak1 votes

I love the use of an eye as the icon. Also that text... xD Can't wait to see this hit live, have wanted it for ages.

I recommend a slightly sharper, more attention grabbing sound. Not quite warning ping levels, but just a tad more than the video shows.

girr1 votes

I have been asking for this for 7 years

YoniBony1 votes

Hi, i have an idea how to stop the players from spamming the "?" enemies are missing ping. Just change the icon "question mark" to something else and people will stop asking questions all over the map, like this i will start play with unmuted pings right i pretty much mute all the pings in the beginning of the game only because of this question mark.

Clôude1 votes

When I first heard about this I thought it was going to be a "please ward this" ping. The actual ping you created is definitely a good one but could we maybe also have a green ping with different wording. It's quite a nuisance to ping drag or baron or some other location and then have to clarify in chat that you just want them to ward it.

DeathBurst1 votes

We should just get one ping, I don't care about the color, with a generic wording that works for both cases.

EDIT: example of generic wording: "Vision here!", without giving precision if it's allied or enemy vision in the text. Should be obvious from the context, and if it's not you can just add a "Danger" or "Help" ping to clarify.

Dicerson1 votes

Could give it a similar sound effect to the scrying eye trinket, but perhaps a bit higher (or lower) pitch? Sort of like an "Enemy has this area Revealed!" type thing?

True xDamage1 votes

Guys right now we have "alt+mouse drag" and "G+mouse drag" if we can use either of to just ping enemy teammates. Like enemy jungler over that area or Mid laner over there ping would be way cool to communicate ;)
