What happens when people can't senselessly downvote posts

Take a look at the RANT section, you'd imagine it would be the most popular place to be with how much people like to disagree here, but literally like every post is hardly looked at simply because people pay no attention to a place where they can't just downvote and go

Counter Point:

People shouldn't care too much about what people are ranting about.

I don't care if Bob thinks Yasuo is broken.

I don't care if Janice thinks Riot is trash because Star Guardian Urgot isn't a thing yet.

I don't care if somebody thinks Becky should look at her butt. Because it is just round and out there. (Hopefully people understand the ref).

I Don't Care if someone wants to yell into the void of space and not actually discuss things.

I would argue that votes should stay. They do serve a purpose. However they should not be hiddent if they are downvoted. That is one of the problems.

Here is my take on this issue.

How to use voting system on your forum - The right way

  • You can only vote after you have put a 50 word count comment. Without a 50 word out comment you cannot up-vote nor down-vote. The reason? You did not justify why and you are preventing a possible interesting topic being discussed.
  • Down-votes should not affect the popularity of a post. The argument here is that down-votes mean that people don't like it and its a good way to filter it out. Fine then don't display it in normal view but display it in hot or make a separate section called "controversial" that will be actually based on how many posts and views the specific post has had.
  • Another way is to show a vote percentage. However the percentage should be based on the views and comments that the post has got.

The above will allow for discussions to actually happen. The down-vote button will become a useful tool instead of a censoring or harassing tool. People will be nicer. [slayer-pantheon-thumbs]

I like forums without upvoting/downvoting because I rather read why someone agrees or disagrees. I think its more interesting to have discussion. Points are pointless, basically. Never really liked Reddit. I appreciate replies I get here if it helps me approve (even if I don't always reply back). Points don't really explain that much. We don't know if the person disagrees with everything or just one part of the post. Is the person wrong or just a jerk? Or the downvoter just didn't like the post, even if the post was correct. But I guess points is just nice at a glance. It might save time from looking at "bad posts", I guess. I've always gave negative posts a chance. I always look under recent in this board. Rants are never listed on there as far as I'm aware.

Rant isn't just Gameplay minus votes. It's specifically intended for low-quality content, and we can't even post comments to threads. It's like shouting into a trash can.

Downvotes serve an incredibly important purpose: filtering out low-quality content so that good content is more visible. If anything, people should be more willing to downvote such chaff, and mods should be more willing to remove it outright. If Gameplay has a dozen highly-voted YasuOP threads on the front page, it's that much harder to pick out threads that might actually be worth reading.
