i nearly lost a ranked game because of this. i went to sell it because it was funny for early game, but i needed gold for another item. i go to sell, its worth 0 gold. i repeat; selling this item gives no money back. zero gold. 
Prob. because you can't buy the transformed form normally in the shop.
But why would you sell it in the first place when it is fully stacked? It's one of the strongest items then.
I believe the store owner is buying it back for it's then worth value. I mean, no one in the game is going to buy it back from him so it'd be a sever loss to buy it back.
In what world is it considered cost effective to buy a tear, upgrade it to muramana and sell it even if it came 50% of its price back.

Unless you build enough mana items tho, technically on most champions an 
is better. I think it's worth because I never like running out of mana in the first place, I like to spam. Late game that might not be an issue tho, so selling it would be worth sometimes.
I agree that this needs to be changed, but I can't stop laughing because you just complained about nearly losing a ranked and then a little further you just said that you builded a full item for fun just for early game

Sounds to me if you were not buying items to help your team and trying to be funny isnt the way to go. some would consider that trolling.
quite logic if you ask me. it evolves into another item that cant be bought so it cant be sold.

It costs 0 gold in the coding so that's why.
Curious why you would ever want to do this.
Either you're playing a champ where Muramana is good, in which case there's literally nothing you could sell it for that's more useful, it's a good item, or you're playing a champ where it's not good, in which case you've been trolling by stacking a 750 tear only to obtain an item that's shit on your champ.
Regardless it should be patched to sell for the same price as Manamune.
