[Gameplay] No HUD, Restart Required

My friend was playing normal draft with me. He had no HUD (couldn't level up, see mini-map, view his summoner spells/abilities, etc). Just the gameplay screen with the ability to open the shop and purchase items. A restart of the client (old client) solved the issue, but I don't think that it should have been necessary. The game prior did not have any issues with the HUD. Shed some light for me?
