I had a game the other day where my team had players ranging from bronze 1 to gold 5 in ranked. Is this a matchmaking bug or something that just happens occasionally? My premade was bronze and silver and we were matched with a bronze and a gold player. On top of that the gold player was plat last season...no one else had any record of being that high rank. Was that a bug?
You are matched based on your MMR, not your rank, so it's easily possible for people within 6 divisions to be paired with each other. Lots of people have MMR 3 divisions higher or lower than the rank they currently hold. I wouldn't place too much importance on a player's current rank or their border. My impression is that any one rank will have people that perform up to 1 tier higher and 1 tier lower than that rank's average, so you'll easily find Bronzes as good as Golds and Golds as bad as Bronzes etc.
