Problems with BotRK (not about the fixed exploit)

OK, so BotRK is one of my favorite AD items on Quinn, the active is really nice during tag team for obvious reasons, but for the longest time the active has rarely ever worked for me. I always have it set to smartcast on my 5 key, and it's not a keyboard issue since pots on the same key work perfectly fine, same as wards and other active items that target someone (face of the mountain as an example), it's only BotRK that has this issue for me.

Anyone else having the issue with the item not activating 80% of the time or is there something I'm just missing? I usually pop the active immediately after landing a skill which leads me to assume there's a lag between using skills and using item actives since when I don't use any skills before it it works just slightly more often.
