Ever since patch 9.18 was live, the game has lost its fun

Hi TFT Team,

As the title suggested, this game has gone from a fun game mode, to another meta oriented playing style type of game. And what's worse? You simply cannot beat the meta unless you run along with it given the unique feature of Team Fight Tactics. I will address the issues as of follow.

As way background, I am a platinum ranked player who started playing ranked since it was live. I enjoyed the game mode for which it allowed each player to play a different composition and synergy, and encouraged diversity that also allows you to win a game. Ever since patch 9.18 was live, this fun feature is being killed by a highly unhealthy meta - namely "You Cannot Get to Top 4 Unless You Are Running a Certain Comp".

While this name is as ambiguous as it sounds, we can illustrate further here. Recently I have not been getting top 4 for around 30 games using the game logic which allows me to at least get to Platinum 2. From my observation, what people have been doing is abusing a certain comps, such as: Void Assassins (make Kassadin an assassin), rangers, dragons - other comps will get stomped hard. Especially with this Void Assassins abuse, given in this comp there are a few low cost units (Kha, Kassadin, Zed, Pyke), it encourages people to reroll hard in early levels, and completely kill the players who enjoy taking time to make variety combination and save for late game. Once these comps are finished, there is no way to win.

As a result, the variety of combination (which I think what was the game's intention) has been destroyed. Everyone is doing the same strategy over and over again. This is not healthy and kills the fun of playing this game. Please do something to stop this kind of meta playing. What I believe this game should be, is that everyone is allowed to build their own synergy of whatever the RNG gives you, as oppose to FORCE these unbeatable comps to stomp every single game.

Please fix this mess Riot.

Yours sincerely, A Frustrated Player

The more I play TFT after taking a 2 month break the more it feels even in worse state than when I played last time (which was the ninja-assassin, glacial or gunslingers meta). At least at that time you could still win if you were lucky on items and tier three and build a decent synergies. Now with the same comp that would get me to top3 before (and which was not meta) I end up 8th or 7th and it is extremely onesided.

  • Getting random champions from minions is bad idea. In most cases you just sell that champ anyway so it is just as if gold dropped, in other cases you get the champ you needed and a stomp begins.
  • Neeko's Help is badly designed item that is only used in very late game to complete tier2 on (some)gold4 or gold5 champions and sometimes to get tier3 on gold2-3. In patch notes it was announced as an item to help in early.
  • Addition of hextech champions was unhealthy to the game, it is even harder to get tiers3. Hextech itself is pure crap early and the only thing that makes it somehow viable in late is Jinx. Otherwise this is just a buff to gunslingers who got another high gold champ to the comp. Other champions are barely used outside hextech as they are weak on their own.
  • Dragon (npc not comp) still acquires item bonuses and that can make it unkillable for certain comps.
  • On-hit items (and gunsligners) are still a problem. Now it seems to be disarm item running rampage.
  • Glacial aka permastun is a still a problem.
  • Because t3 is so hard to get and t2 is so easy to get (now with Neeko's Help even more so), it incentives to play chosen comp every game which make games stalemate and boring. Everyone is playing the same (best) comp because even with the changes in the last patch, you are guaranteed to get all champs of the comp you choose to t2 around the carousel before raptors. Whether you succeed or not with that comp usually depends on other player comps and the items you get. This is the state of the game from initial release though.

Not sure if it is the level/XP changes as I didn't really check how exactly it was changed but it feels like you are punished even harder to try roll tier3s than before. You roll and roll and when raptors come you are 2 levels behind and lose to everyone despite you rolled that sweet t3 Garen (who gets outperformed hard by elementalist golem anyway).

Well said. Keeping a meta with so few viable comps makes the game very stale and sadly boring .

They need to fix a lot of things with TFT. I'm sitting gold 1 right now and I'm playing on my girls account because she doesn't care for TFT. Climbing from iron 2 to silver 1 it seems like everyone is running Void assassins, I have ran all the comps that have a good chance to counter it, but it only seems like the games people do not run it, I end up top 4 or higher, its pretty obvious when someone is running it when they get spat first caracal. and with some rng they can get it up and running in a few turns, I one time saw 3 different people trying to get it off the ground with only 1 person being able to get kass to an assassin. it kinda ruined the game for me, iv been back and forth between 99lp and 10 lp. they need to change assassins again (which would kill it) or go something about how it will stomp people lvl 7-9 (if you make it) because if someone who spent all game planning out and changing their comp to go with a "meta" build and team they should be rewarded for it, not get slapped why a team that someone camped lvl 5 for all game and have 40 or so hp. just my 2 cents.

I agree, its lost its spark... too many champs and I won't even go for any tier 1 3 stars because its pretty much impossible if you aren't hyper rolling... The thing that annoys me the most though is just shapeshifters, I see 2-3 people go for it every game and if im working on economy I just lose my power spike it seems like.

EDIT: Was hoping they'd keep TFT more balanced but its just as bad as the SR meta, you just have things that are good and beat out the slow growing comps like 6 sorcs with varus/aatrox as a sorc, it just feels stale now (maybe because its harder to get your ideal composition with the added units I dunno) ...

You forgot to mention toxic glacial..

I never tried 3 void/assassins, I managed with knights and wilds early game. Early Kassadin is OP but only with speed items on him. But I will never search for a 3 stars kassadin because he has a very poor dps late game even with the best items on him.

Start comp is not necessary to be the last wished comp. At level 7 I change almost all units. There are 1/3 golds lost for level 2 units but this is acceptable.

So if you consider that a specific comp is good early game, then build it give items to one unit and than sell units when your new wished comp is ready.

I'm in Bronze.

Here the meta is rangers. You would see people putting at least Ashe-Vayne or Ashe-Varus in absolutely any team. They are just too good, in particular Ashe with speed attack.

Some comps being stronger than the rest - is nothing new. This issue (to put it like that) - was present in all the other versions (that's why the kept nerfing and buffing certain comps). It's RNG - so luck can have a big saying, thus... "chasing the most ideal builds" is sure to get you lots of lost games (at least - more than if you'd work with what you got) .For same reason "you can't abuse certain comps" - because you don't have control over what you get. I'm only plat 2 and 3 on 2 both of my accounts - but i won many games vs the comps you mentioned above. (also - lost with those comps). Basically, compared to patch 9.17 - rangers paired with glacial and knights - took the place of nobles (most ideal comp in past patches). There's still the same amount versatility (or it's as absent as it used to be - if you will).

On the other hand... with patch 9.18 - they fixed those CRINGE games where you were cursed to get only gold and max 1 item. Like seriously - stage 4 - 5 - had 2 completed items on all my units and was facing players with 8 - 9 completed items. Some games are still stressing (the RNG part is still annoying as f' in some games) - but the patch 9.18 is definitely an improvement. Glacial are still in need for some nerfs (lower the chance to freeze) - or maybe a new items that gives you immunity to CC for 5 seconds or such.

If you want to beat Void assassins - aim for a comp of brawlers + shapeshifters:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KceTYMiAcfM

Or the full shapeshifters comp with wild comp (if you manage to get to lvl 8).

I lost to yordles and sorcerer with the void assassin comp. And won with glacial, elementalist, knights and guardian.
