I always look at all the other teams to see what is being taken, and try to go a different direction, or just bank out until I get a better late game comp. Getting last place for the first half is a decent strategy as you get first pick on carousel rounds. And 3 star is good, but is not everything.
This game this morning I had 0 x 3 stars, the 2nd place person I beat had 6 x 3 star...3 stars and items isn't always everything (they are a big part tho)

There is quite a bit of macro-play in managing your bank, watching what the other teams are doing so you can counter and build a decent long game. The tactics are in cost-benefit analysis throughout the game and in positioning. I usually am in the bottom for the first half and then 1st or at least top 3 in a lot of games. I usually try to have a 10 bank by the first carousel, and then 40 by the second. Then I sit at 50. Using refreshes I do seldom an try to still keep to the 10/20/30/40/50 benchmarks. The only time I start pouring on the refreshes is after I have the max level or if I am about to lose and not doing well I will quick burn and sometimes it works out.
But yes, there is still a lot of RNG.
