I recently played tft after a long while. Back in auto chess and the previous version of tft it was better to have higher tier units than to have synergies. Synergies were usually just the cherry on top. I tried that method but the best i can do is 4th-5th place. So what do you guys do?

Some synergies like Summoner, Inferno, and Poison are worth using even with some 1 stars in the mix and lower tier units.
However, if you find a good carry unit you'll want them in your comp. There's no solo efficient unit like Akali in tier 4/5 so you need both, but building around things like Olaf, Annie, Yorick, Twitch, Kindred, Veigar, Zed, ect is worth doing.
However about 2/3 of Lux pickups are solo efficient and worth a grab. Instantly adds a synergy to your comp if its a 2 breakpoint element.
