The gold is not causing you to lose. It's your own bad decisions that make you lose. At the end of the game you had 3 completed items or close to it, you lost because you made poor decisions.

This game is less rng and more skill than you think. You could literally get 3 items the whole game and still get top 4. And 2 of those items are from carrousel.
