[Maps & Modes] Learning LoL Mode

TL;DR;

  • Problem: Learning LoL with (or even without) higher ranked friends is painful not only because you have to deal with a great number of different champions but also because of the skill difference between you and your friends/smurfs.

  • Solution, maybe: Create a game-mode (or make it the default until Level 16, for instance) where all abilities have the same CD, cost and damage. This would make the game a little bit more fair (since smurfs would have to rely on their own skills and not on high rewards champions) and would allow new players to learn about all the different champions and skills before having to manage variables like CD, cost, and so on and so forth.

(Please bear in mind that English is not my native language)

I’m trying to teach LoL to my nephew but I can’t help but notice that he is going through the same troubles that I went when I started playing last year with two lvl30 friends. The game is brutal because of the difference in skills and champion stats (Runes and Masteries). You can't really ADC because you might get killed even by a Support. You can’t jungle due its complexity and importance on the match outcome. Mid lane is difficult due to ganks and a unskilled player is like an All You Can Eat restaurant for a skilled Yasuo, Ahri, Brand, Ez AP, etc. Support will be not as useful since you have little to contribute. And top, well, you will go top, hug your tower, and hope that your Jungle babysits you like there is no tomorrow...

I didn’t lost all my games before level 30, of course, but I felt that my friends were doing all the work while I was there, like a paper weight. Not to mention that smurfs and trolls will harass you for every single mistake.

So I think that if the game was subdivided into different and subsequent levels of complexity, I’d had a better time playing it in the beginning. Also, it would discourage smurfs to pick "high risk/high reward” champions just to troll and then /all chat “get rekt noobs” because now everybody is playing in the same ground rules.

I mean, I had a match with a clearly smurf LeBlanc and it was not cool, at all. I was support, my nephew ADC. Everything was ok until LeBlanc gets so many kills that she could one shot our Top Mundo. It was ridiculous. I’m not fan of “hit and run” champions like LeBlanc, Ekko, and Zed because the very nature of “hit and run” in a game, IMO, is just cheating. I could deal with the same LB if I were playing with my lvl30 teammates, but in a low level match it is impossible. And of course, she went /all chat to harass my team and point out how “good" she was.

LeBlanc was just an example. There are many champions out there that benefit mechanical skilled players (Nidalee and her 3sec CD Ult, Vayne and her TD), and it is ok, but it is also unfair with someone who is still learning. Therefore, if all champions were about the same, a new player would still be hit, but would be capable of defend him/herself and attack in the same pace and effectiveness.

So, I’d like to see a game mode (or until lvl16) where every skill were equal regardless the utility of the skill. Or maybe the game could introduce topics like:

  • Level 1 to 6: No masteries, no runes, CD and damage are equal for all abilities, same AD, AP, Health, Armour, AS, MS for every champion.
  • Level 7 to 9: No masteries, no runes, CD and damage are equal for all abilities, same MS for every champion.
  • Level 10 to 12: No masteries, no runes, CD are equal for all abilities.
  • Level 13 to 15: No masteries, no runes.
  • Level 16 and so on: the game as it is today.

The level of a game would match the lower level player. Except for friends, only players within the specified range would be assigned to this match. For instance, my lvl7 nephew creates a game and invites me. Although I'm lvl30, I'm not using my masteries and runes anymore. The game will then invite only lvl7 to 9 players for our team and will pick another team within the same range for us to play against. It doesn't matter if the other team is composed of 4 challengers and one lvl8 because we all will have the same CD, damage, Health, etc.

What do you think? It maybe would be useful for the Balance Team as well :)

The whole idea of making champion abilities have changed cool downs is detrimental to learning the game, cool downs are high on certain abilities because of damage OR utility, you cant make all spells have the same cool down, it would make learning the game even worse, because once you hit 16 the game would COMPLETELY change.

Honestly the only thing i support is the idea of removing runes and masteries at early levels, but nothing else.
