From Summoner's Rift to Maps & Modes

Hey superfriends!

As you may have noticed, we just updated the name of these boards from Summoner's Rift, to Maps & Modes. With this change, I wanted to share the new guidelines in case you haven't seen them yet. It's broken out into two parts: Culture (the culture we desire) and Etiquette (the behavior we want from you in the Maps & Modes boards).

Culture

Maps & Modes is a place to find discussions and content for Summoner’s Rift, Twisted Treeline, Dominion, Howling Abyss or any special mode. Have an idea for a new map or mode? Share it on this board! As long as it’s about maps or modes in League of Legends, you’re in the right place. Just make sure to vote on content that you find valuable, and don’t post about general gameplay or balance that isn’t specifically related to maps or game modes, and certainly don’t question the right of your poro overlords. Yes, Puff-of-Love, we live to feed you.

Etiquette

Follow the Universal Rules and keep content focused on appropriate topics for these boards. We want a place for everything, but if we don’t keep things organized, the boards become a lot less useful and a lot more cluttered.

Let us know about your favorite or least favorite maps or modes. Share those meta-breaking strategies that redefine the Rift. Post suggestions for new maps or modes, or talk about how the maps and modes fit into the League of Legends universe.

The purpose for these guidelines is to create a consistent atmosphere for discussion. If your hanging in Maps & Modes, you should find discussions about maps, modes, or both. You shouldn't find discussions about the current state of Galio (yes, I know...). To maintain the structure, and ever evolving cultures in these boards, we need you ... onboard (heh).

We've rebuilt our moderation team, and approach to preserve the structure and culture by brute force, but the more you help us out, the less we'll have to invoke the Adhere to Guidelines clause in the Universal Rules.

Thanks for reading, and if you have questions or feedback. I'm all ears!

Personally I find it slightly unclear as to what exactly goes in this board vs. other boards. There seems to be a bit of an overlap between "Maps & Modes" and "Live Gameplay Balance".

For example, if I want to talk about the state of the jungle, where do I post? I'm potentially talking about summoner's rift/twisted treeline, but I'm also discussing meta and live balance. What kind of context directs me to post in Maps & Modes vs. Live Gameplay Balance?

What if my post is fairly lengthy, and half my post makes sense in this board, but the other half makes sense in Live Gameplay Balance?

Just some thoughts I had when I read about the changes!

@Tamat does riot have plans enable two maps in the normal draft, blind of summoners rift after the new design? What I mean by that can there be a winter version? I'm not sure how it appeals to most people these days since it was way before their time but it'd be nice for all the veterans and I'm sure the new people would appreciate it!

I mean, the reason it was removed in the first place was because of FPS issues and skills not being visible such as cho gath's Q. With all these new visual effects being updated and the map being more optimized would it be possible to have the design team make it? Also, I know it was a goal to make the game was light as possible on space but this is 2014?! Who doesn't already have a 250gb-1tera hard drive by now? Most games are 12-40 gbs now. League is barely any matter of size. So, I believe I speak for everybody when I say computer space is not an issue anymore. Like, I myself would not be opposed to having a winter map, harrowing map, christmas map just for summoners rift. I mean, they could even be seasonal if you're that worried about space.

Honestly, I'd love to see a more diverse map pool for summoners rift. I love the reskins with different effects such as the harrowing or the snowy music from back in the day. Yes, they'd have to be updated and made and it is possibly time consuming although you already have the new map made. A few new animations, textures should not be a hard load as opposed to starting from scratch such as was done with this project. As already the winter map, harrowing maps already have concepts made prior, so the design wouldn't need much more thought.

I believe the diversity in maps would appeal to many people in league and some skins really shine in those settings. I always liked how counter strike global offense allowed you to pick the maps you wanted to encounter, so for instance if you didn't want to play winter, you could disable it and allow harrowing and normal rift. With the huge pool of players in rift I highly doubt this would cause for longer queue times at all. I know most players would have them all enabled. Of course, there would be those who want to play a specific queue to use a skin. Like, I would go to harrowing with my pumpkin head fiddle sticks.

I believe this encourages people to buy skins and really get into character with role playing and believing your character fits into the map. I believe certain designs can be created to increase popularity on certain skin designs and help hit target markets better during holidays. We all loved winter maps, harrowing maps and it definitely swayed me into purchasing more skins than I normally had just to enjoy them for the brief period of time the maps were active. Unfortunately maps were seasonal at that time and then they became not even seasonal. They were discarded into the void. Well, that's a lie. Malzahar hasn't seen them there either.

Please talk to the design team and whoever is in authority to allow multiple types of designs into normal modes. The maps aren't huge to the point where people are discourages to allow extra space for them. The maps could possibly not be as fps demanding with the new changes to rift. The maps could also be disabled for some people if they choose if they are demanding if it is implemented in a manor that allows the players to select / deselect. The maps encourage people to buy certain skins, champions Ghost skins for harrowing or demonic of nature. Winter skins, jolly silly skins for the winter. And there's so much more that could be done. You could turn rift into a rocky lava format. There is so much that you guys have already thought of and I know this isn't a new idea. But COME ON doesn't a lava river inbetween baron, dragon MAKE YOU JUST SCREAM THIS IS WHY I PLAY THIS GAME. LOL This is why i bought this skin? This is why I love playing brand?!?! This is why I love X??!?!

I hope this idea makes it in and I hope you guys do offer more summoner rift maps. You could even charge a small pass fee for people to enable them although I hope free.
