You know, I never thought much about item lore. I was interested in the Doran's items, given that there's multiple items with the Doran's tag on them (
, 
, and 
). So now I wonder, what about the other items? Is their lore changed due to the retcon? What about their existing lore? Where could you find it?
A Superb Villain2 votesIf you want to make sense of some items, you will need to search League's lore and make appropriate connections. For example, 
does not draw much attention until you remember that well before the present time Lissandra was once called the "Seeker", in addition to it presently being worn by Sejuani. Likewise, nothing is explicitly given of 
's history, but it is quite likely it belongs to 
or one of her previous incarnations, as few match the title of Frost Queen as well as she does.
Perhaps the best example is 
. It has absolutely no lore written about it, but you cannot discuss the Shadow Isles without mentioning the Ruined King. Champion interactions with some of the more recently released characters also sheds some light on certain items, and is a new avenue for item lore. To continue the example, 
has a great deal to say when purchasing the Blade of the Ruined King.
"Once, he was a noble king, until grief overcame his reason." "In the end, it was not his blade that stole our lives." "As once it symbolized hope, so now shall it incite despair!"
Some stories are nice to speculate on, especially the support trio of 
and 
. I like to imagine that was once the shield of a trainee, an initiate's shield long since discarded. 
is possibly the former trainee's shield as a proper soldier of the Rakkor. Finally, 
exemplifies their rise to legend by performing an exceptional feat, christening him or her the "Face of the Mountain", a nameless soldier who, like the stony visage of Mount Targon, could not be moved, even when confronted with impossible odds.
As for if any of it is retconned, I doubt it. Riot has more or less stated that anything which does not directly conflict with current or future lore is canon.

this cloak bears the crest of Shurima, and also looks a lot like the capes of Azir's soldiers. While this may be a stretch the cape is most certainly a Shuriman creation.
the newest item added to League, this thing spawns little voidspawn. The name Zz'rot is potentially the name of the Voidborn species these guys belong to or the name of a larger Voidborn who has history with the portal. I lean more towards the former here.
while the origins of many of these items aren't clear, they're all true ice weapons, meaning they had connections to the Frozen Watchers, the Iceborn and Freljord's long forgotten history. In particular was wielded by an individual known as the Frost Queen, and we only know of two women who have ever held the title of queen in Freljord: Ashe, who is currently the Queen but vying for control of the land, and Avarosa, Ashe's ancestor, who united the Iceborn. Considering the situation it stands to reason the blade belonged to Avarosa a long ass time ago.
while its icon offers little 
makes many references to it being battle-scarred and made for war, indicating that the Armour has seen its place in hundreds of battles. Some REAL old lore, I'm talking BETA lore stated that a troll warlord once wore the Armour and it kept him safe in many battles. Whether this is true is up for debate, I mean it's BETA lore, but hey, I say it's a cool idea to discuss!
another Freljord item exclusive to the Howling Abyss, this is the horn you see on the blue side shopkeeper. That's right, Greyor's horn is purchasable. It was made to be sounded by him should the Watchers ever crawl out of the Abyss.
Items are one of these things I'd love to see explored in lore, which they seem to be doing a bit of here and there, but lore about them is sparse and mostly comes from champion purchase quotes and the icons themselves. I'd love some item flavor text at some point, that's for sure!

Every object he touched, he found ways to improve, and he knew that he was destined to be a brilliant artificer. At the age of 15, he was invited to the League with an offer to assume the role of Master Artificer, a dream come true and an unprecedented honor for one so young. However, fate had other plans. En route, his carriage broke an axle. When he leaned down to inspect it, he was kicked in the head by his donkey, a stern blow. He stumbled back onto the wagon, but when he arrived at the Institute of War he was a different boy. The kick had rendered his mind soft, but it hadn’t robbed him of his passion. He still wanted nothing other than to craft, but where once he may have created singular masterpieces, he now crafted…somewhat simpler items, and many of them. He is a kind, goofy, good-hearted soul, and he takes pride in the work he does. His items are daily selected by champions on the Fields of Justice, and he has a permanent home at the Institute of War.
He also made Wukong's staff. However, with the retcon having taken place it is quite likely Doran no longer resides within the Institute of War, but every other facet of his character is preserved.
