You know, I never thought much about item lore. I was interested in the Doran's items, given that there's multiple items with the Doran's tag on them (
, 
, and 
). So now I wonder, what about the other items? Is their lore changed due to the retcon? What about their existing lore? Where could you find it?
If you want to make sense of some items, you will need to search League's lore and make appropriate connections. For example, 
does not draw much attention until you remember that well before the present time Lissandra was once called the "Seeker", in addition to it presently being worn by Sejuani. Likewise, nothing is explicitly given of 
's history, but it is quite likely it belongs to 
or one of her previous incarnations, as few match the title of Frost Queen as well as she does.
Perhaps the best example is 
. It has absolutely no lore written about it, but you cannot discuss the Shadow Isles without mentioning the Ruined King. Champion interactions with some of the more recently released characters also sheds some light on certain items, and is a new avenue for item lore. To continue the example, 
has a great deal to say when purchasing the Blade of the Ruined King.
"Once, he was a noble king, until grief overcame his reason." "In the end, it was not his blade that stole our lives." "As once it symbolized hope, so now shall it incite despair!"
Some stories are nice to speculate on, especially the support trio of 
and 
. I like to imagine that was once the shield of a trainee, an initiate's shield long since discarded. 
is possibly the former trainee's shield as a proper soldier of the Rakkor. Finally, 
exemplifies their rise to legend by performing an exceptional feat, christening him or her the "Face of the Mountain", a nameless soldier who, like the stony visage of Mount Targon, could not be moved, even when confronted with impossible odds.
As for if any of it is retconned, I doubt it. Riot has more or less stated that anything which does not directly conflict with current or future lore is canon.
Rito drops the ball on lore like this so its kinda sad. I really thought A champion named doran would have an eventual release like Doran The Master of All or something
