Is there even a story line/back story/narrative to the game at all anymore?

Used to be the league of legends for political arbitration and what not. Then they acknowledge how that prevents certain characters from fitting in, like literal gods like A'sol can't really be bound to an arena. Then they rewrote/destroyed nicely embellished champion lore into 2 or 3 sentences for the surima ark.

We still get nice isolated back drop stories like the pirate arc and the nami comic and the project skin stuff.

But where do all these stories cement together? Noxus and Demacia have very little meaning now other than feel of their characters. Nothing really goes on with those nations story wise. Feels like the foundation for the characters is there, but it's like stars in the sky all floating away from everything else.

They cement together because they take place in Runeterra (most of the time). That's really the long and the short of it. It's on Riot to make the stories that flesh out the entire setting beyond what we have at the moment. They're getting on that, but when you've gotta reestablish the backstories of 138 main characters, 12 major regions, an entire planet and elements of the wider universe beyond it can take a bit of time.

I believe (someone back me up on this) that Galio references the nexus gems in his VO. Riot has also confirmed that summoners still exist in the Universe, I believe, at Galio's release.

I have faith that we're coming back to that reveal, and SR will once again be canon. Gotta be patient, though. Like Sharjo already said, these things take time.

I'm not necessarily talking about everyone being "linked". More like the opposite, before you were able to have all these varying characters with backgrounds and personalities that would never ever meet in passing. The reason they did in the original lore was that Summoners would choose them to battle for arbitration on the fields of justice. And that's how they were all "cemented" together. They were all decided to be badass enough to fight in the arena by a summoner, with a few exclusions that joined on their own (Morgana for instance only joining so she could continue to fight Kayle ).

Take dota for example. It's very simple, Defender of the Ancients, everyone is here to fight to defend their idols (or w.e) while destroying the other. Dead simple, no conflicting story, but also almost no depth. Jax , and Fiddlesticks have great original lore, and I also love Brand and Nautilus lore. Hell you could make an animated short film off nauts lore alone.

Now you have things like azir, and bard, and a'sol, and even kindred (a god of death in an arena where death isn't possible?).

I guess my point is, their shift started around azir or A'sol, when they rewrote lots of lore. And ever since then, you haven't heard anything about the League itself. The first 4 years and namesake of the game haven't even been mentioned in new characters. It's just, here's this new person"My name is X look at me! "

At this point it's just like, well why does the Institute of Justice even exist? Why are any obsolete summoners even around anymore to have diplomatic fights in an arena to stave off a 3rd rune war when star god shit is going on.

And most of all, no one has ever confirmed that Jinx's sister is actually Vi.
