Tristana VU feedback

Unfortunately, I have a few problems with Tristana. Well, actually just one:

She doesn't look like Tristana. Or a Yordle, for that matter.

I think this has got to do with her face, ears and body shape.

  • Live Tristana has a square-ish face, while PBE Tristana's is triangular. All other Yordles have square or round faces.
  • Live Tristana's ears point backwards, while PBE Tristana's point to the sides.
  • Live Tristana's body is child-like and fully covered, while PBE Tristana appears to have a hourglass figure and a bared midriff. All other Yordles are child-like and fully covered.

If you'd make Tristana's jaw squarer, turn her ears so that they point backwards, and cover her midriff (and/or make her body look more like Lulu's), I think it would help a lot with her readability and visual cohesion with the other Yordles.

You seem to be under the assumption that we wanted to adhere to design elements (intentional or not) that are prevalent on old Tristana. That is not the case. We're redefining as we go. The things you've identified are precisely the things we targeted to make new Tristana unique but fall in line with the future of Yordles as a whole.

Right now we're forging ahead with a different idea as to what Yordles are and what they look like. Tristana is only the beginning quite honestly.

The thing is that most of the other yordles are simply outdated in terms of visual design.

I guess that tristanas new design is going to become pretty much standard for yordles.

Keep in mind that Riot seems to be redefining what exactly a yordle looks like. It was stated that Ziggs and Lulu were the base for yordle aesthetics, the foundation. That does not mean either fit contemporary yordle standards. When Gnar was released, Riot explained they were closer to their vision of how a yordle should look, and apparently they concluded yordles should be larger in body, ears, and eyes.

Gnar has a fairly small body when compared to other yordles, even older Bandle City champions, with the exception of Rumble, but he is explicitly described as a child. In addition, Gnar is a primitive yordle, so his design likely plays a significant factor in deciding the appearance of modern yordles. For example, his eyes are massive, but the pupil dominates them. Tristana also has big eyes, and while they aren't quite so dilated as Gnar's, you can barely see her sclera. Gnar has ears nearly the same size as his head, while Tristana's are only slightly smaller than her skull.

Overall, Riot is moving away from "tiny, baby smurfs" for ladies and "walking hamsters" for men; no more heads with limbs attached. Compare Rumble's old splash with his new one: http://whiterabbitcostuming.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/rumble-splash.jpg http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-k4jpbUNJvto/VDg2iyVK1pI/AAAAAAAAa90/9Vv1YRMTczE/s1600/Rumble_Splash_0.jpg

In the old artwork he had a body roughly the same size as his head with two strange trapezoids for ears. In the new image his body is proportionally larger and his ears are more triangular, not to mention his eyes are slightly larger.

While this may not be quite so credible, as in-game representation is somewhat skewed, Updated Tristana is only slightly shorter than Katarina.

In short, yordles are larger and more animalistic than previously conceived. To be completely honest, I like the change, perhaps not in its entirety, but I do appreciate the greater level of detail.

I like New Tristana for several reasons. 1 she is more inline to the other Yordles. The Newest Yordle that game out is Gnar. If you look at the redesign for Tristana, she has a lot of elements from him. Actually she physically looks like she is a descendant from Gnar's tribe. Her large eyes, big ears, and smile really remind me of Gnar. I love the bigger ears. They are more expressive, they easily convey emotions without having to rely on hands. I showed new Tristana to a buddy who only plays DOTA. He even agreed (amazingly) that new Tristana is so much better than the older one.

You forgot how huge Tristy was compared to some of the newer yordles ingame.

I think the idea is that since she's a commando, she's some ripped version of the typical female yordle?

*Doesn't explain the face stuff, though.

Like human beings, I can imagine Yordles would have variations in their aesthetics that would allow them individual differences. I think the new Trist looks enough like a Yordle (in fact, I think they nailed the Yordle look) that most players will immediately realized she is one.

Overall it's a great VU. I only have one tiny issue...

She looks too much like Gnar.
