Why does Gangplank use Barrels?

This has bothered me since I saw te Rework preview over the summer. How do barrels fit Gangplank thematically? Why did we get rid of the inspirational pirate captain in exchange for barrels of gunpowder? Like I get they are good, but why does Gangplank use them? It just doesn't seem to fit the character, the closest thing to barrel usage in the lore is when MissFortune blows up a barrel to dispell some ghosts during the Harrowing. Just something thats been bothering me for a while.

It fits him thematically because he's a very pragmatic fighter. He'll bring a gun to a sword fight, light his sword on fire, or even call cannons from his ship.

The barrels are him setting up traps. GP won't fight you fairly and putting a barrel in the bush showcases this perfectly.

Fiora for example has to actually fight you. GP can avoid fighting you. He's a pirate.

Remember that scene where Jack cheats when fighting Will?

Will: You cheated. Jack: Pirate.

I guess its mostly because gun-powder barrels simply fit the pirate theme.

You know like someone rolling a barrel towards the enemy, then shooting it to make it explode.
