How Do Miss Fortune's Guns Work?

I always look at them, thinking of any way to explain how they work. But it simply doesn't make any sense, I can't wrap my head around it.

Here they're basically tiny cannons, yet she can fire them at enemies as if they were two pistol-sized machine guns.

And here, they make a little more sense, but I don't exactly see how ammo would even fit or work. If anything, it's only one shot. Also, on another note, if this is her formal wear, then why does she see the need to change her weapon as well? Her guns are, after all, a product of her mother's and what basically put her on her path of vengeance against Gangplank in the first place, why would she take a pair that look seemingly better lore-wise?

I do have a theory that they may be outlawed hextech, as stuff like that is also found in Bilgewater alongside other smuggled products, but can there be any confirmation at all on how Shock and Awe work?

Because videogame logic. Don't question it.

They're based on muzzleloader flintlock weaponry. These were all the rage until the concept and design of the repeater emerged around the late 19th century. Basically you would load a pellet through the muzzle, sprinkle some gunpowder on the hammer (the flintlock), some gunpowder was in the chamber already via the muzzle, and the hammer would trigger the powder and fire the round. It was common for individuals to carry many pistols to avoid the 20 - 40s time of having to reload in combat.

At least, that's how I think it works.

It was inefficient to design that kind of reload system early in League's inception; Jhin was the first (iirc) to really function off of it, other than Graves in late 2015, but that felt more nuanced than anything else. If they redesigned MF, it would make sense to have her use multiple pistols or function off an ammo system. However, this could be true for anyone who uses a firearm, like Kled, Cait, Jinx, etc. Jinx's minigun doesn't even work like a minigun, but rather like a semi-automatic rifle. It would be cool to have her have to stand still to deal damage in minigun stance, but it would severely hurt her viability imo like it did for Kog.

Mate, if I were inclined I could probably go on a rant why every weapon in this game is wrong for one reason or another.

But it's a bit pointless. I don't think any of the visual designers really care about making realistic weapons. So they don't try. The reason they work is because no one cares enough to learn how a blunderbuss functions when they drew it up. And so it just does.

Looking at the design, Miss Fortune's Blunderbuss has a two-fold function. It's main barrel has an opening / separation point between the barrel and it's chamber. It also incorporates a chamber not too dissimilar from that of a revolver. Notice that the chamber itself that has multiple hammer ignition points. This would indicate that her pistol incorporates elements of rapid-fire as well as single fire. It could be loaded with a big lead ball straight into it's barrel, or peppered with smaller shells into it's chamber. So for her to shoot a big lead ball per her q, or rain down bullets with her E or her ult, it could make sense even from a design point, and not just simply video game logic.
