The circumstances just line up perfectly, and I really doubt they would change GP just because of lore completely unrelated to the game. Especially when he was just released.

More likely he would have made a deal with the "bearded serpent God-thing" to reincarnate himself in exchange for a service (sacrifices?). I say this due to how she was repeadetely brought up in part 3. There was also that tentacle that was mentioned to have appeared while graves was swimming away.
