speculating about the coming lore: angels, demons and kindred
Hello readers, As the title says I've opened this one to speculate about the roles some of the champs will take in this game's lore, once it's finished. Especially, I'll talk about the concept of angels, demons and deities in fantasy and try to use one of these concepts on some of the champions that have not yet found a place in the new lore (particularly Morgana and Kayle).
The most common concept for this is based on religion: Gods create servants for their purpose (angels or demons) and sometimes have children who live on earth. The gods themselves are said to a)always have existed, b)have come from another world or c)be personifications of the power that holds the universe together/the power of the universe. However, in my opinion this concept just doesn't fit with league. Valoran's demons (tahm is confirmed to be a demon, nocturn is pretty likely to turn out as one, others (brand or fiddlesticks for example) are debatable) have no shared purpose (but only seem to care about themselves), the angels are fighting internally and some beings that could only be explained as lesser deities this way (kindred for example) are to weak to be gods.
This is why I'll work with a second concept in my speculations: The concept of supernatural beings as manifestations of notions, hopes and fears. Even though this sounds more cryptic, it is a far more flexible model. In a world where there is magic in everything at all times, even imagination has a power of its own. A single human believing in angels wouldn't change anything, however, a whole country believing in them over multiple generations would generate a formidable amount of magical energy. After some time, this image of a holy being would converge with associated notions, creating enough magic to give birth to an angel. Of course, the same would apply to demons and everything imagineable, if there are only enough people contributing to it.
Using this concept on kayle and morgana gives some basic room for speculation. Personally, I think the most fitting way would be to assume that kayle was born from respect for the law and the ideal conception of order, while morgana embodies the feeling of longing for freedom. Both of have the form of angels, since both order and freedom are seen as good, however, the contradiction between these values would surely lead them to conflict. And in a conflict like that, it's clear that morgana would be the one to fall from being a pristine, holy angel, since freedom also encompasses the freedom to take actions that are considered evil.
If we look at Tahm Kench, the only champion that has been confirmed to be a demon 'till now, it's clear that he's something totally other than them: unlike divine messengers, the henchmen of evil are pictured in many different ways. His lookalike, the catfish, is a gluttonous animal that can also be used as a symbol of greed or gluttony and his outfit and his manner of speaking and dressing himself are based on a shady merchant, fitting the archetype that's known as "crossroad demon" to anyone who watches supernatural (there are similar myths in many cultures, so I'll just assume people in valoran would have similar myths). This however gives room to speculate about some other champs: nocturn is designed after fear of darkness, Brand can be ranked somewhere between fear of fire and wrath, Fiddlesticks' theme is fear and malevolence. Even some champs that have a place in the new lore might have a place in that. Shaco and evelynn for example seem at least halve demonic, while Morde's unclear origin makes him another possible demon (or demonlike being).
Of course there are also some beings that can't be called evil like skarner, malphite, gallio or kindred. It's not safe to say wether thes magical beeings could be called beings of "wild magic", or if they were born the same way the angels and demons where. In Kindreds case, I'm pretty sure they(wolf and lamb) can be seen as a part of this, since they are not just magic creatures, but the embodiment of death, a power that's associated with many images by humans. Kindred's duality, that's currently mostly seen as the duality between peaceful and violent death, could this way be reinterpreted as the duality between death as salvation (from pain, earthly suffering etc.) and feared death. This interpretation is most giving, since it would make kindred a halve demonic, halve angelic being.
if you read till this point, you have my respect. if you search for a tl:rd here, I'm sorry, but i can't give you one, pls bear with my thought process. If you have your own idea or any comment about my theory, pls reply, I'm really interested what you guys think about how some of the older champs should be implemented into the new lore. Also, if you feel like i made a mistake in my thoughts, pls tell me, I hope for feedback.
