Can someone explain this to me?

RIven killed elder Souma, but didn't murder him? I'll just assume that means that she unintentionally killed him.

But they say he tried to break her weapon. I'm a bit confused about that part. Did he like, try to break it but it exploded in his face so he died or did he and RIven have a deathmatch where he somewhat broke her blade with his wind powers and but eventually she overpowered him? (Yasuo broke a piece of her blade too while fighting)

Am I missing something?

Elder tried to help Riven, and break her blade, as she wish. Blade exploded terribly, one of pieces went through his neck and ultimately killed him.

It was accident, which makes Riven an unlucky victim.

Pretty much. When the blade fell apart a second time during the fight between Yasuo and Riven, a shard went straight for Asa. That seems to be what happened when Souma tried to help Riven break her blade. Maybe the enchantment caused some sort of head-seeking properties, maybe it's just coincidence.

This is one of the reasons I dislike Riot's lore writing. Everything is done in immediate terms. It feels rushed and flimsy. They could've said that Riven attacked Souma in a grief-stricken rage, torn between her lingering loyalty to Noxus and the grief of what happened to her comrades. They could've said that in her confusion, she mistook Souma's attempts to lead her down a serene path as another attempt to control her actions the way Noxus did. They could've said Riven struck him down in that fight, and immediately regretted it. That she fled, only to find out another had been wrongfully sentenced for her deed years later. This would create a certain strain between Yasuo and Riven that time and emotion built.

Instead they just said "Riven talked to Souma, her blade killed him when he tried to break it, and she selectively forgot that specific memory because Yasuo has to be the assumed culprit SOMEHOW."
