The Ruined king as a playable champ ?

I LAV IT MATE··6 votes·3,422 views

Just an idea ... but can we see the Ruined King as a champion in the future ? I can already imagine the interactions between him and The Shadow isles Champs ... Yorick in particular ...

Overall the big question would be how to differentiate him from other shadow isles champs

We've got already a death knight/walking armor/evil overlord Mordekaiser an undead chimeraHecarim a soul collector Thresh a lich Karthus a ghost Kalista a necromancer/gravekeeper Yorick

And well Sion is pretty much our frankenstein monster

So what else could the ruined king be? He will need some theme to make him stand out among the roster.

Yeah .... you're totally right .... but when i hear "The Ruined King" ... the first thing that comes to my mind is the picture of "The Lich King" from WoW ... not saying that riot should copy the concept of "the Lich King" ... but that's what he sounds like ... an undying king with a sword ... and magical power ofc

I think XCzambie's suggestion of making the Ruined King a ragged old man from royalty is a cool and unique idea. As it is, we don't really have any kings in League -- maybe something along the lines of Arthas' father, Terenas, as a visual inspiration. Curses and hexes could be his main weapon, seeing as there aren't any League champs who use them, and how the Blessed Isles became cursed due to his misuse of the sacred waters.

I just got a very ambitional idea, perhaps the ruined king could start as just that,a ragged old man,and seeing as kayn got something like this, have him grow stronger as the game progresses, all the while gaining an appearance [kayn part] worthy of the legendary ruined king of the Blessed Isles

Edit 1 : his style of fighting could be a broadsword in one hand [left cuz im left handed :P] and in the other wielding magic that would most fit a ruined king [fire, maybe even controlling the shadows themselves [overlaping a little with yorick]]

Edit 2 : scratch the shadows part, the ruined king is a good but deppresed guy He could start off the game all deppresed not caring for anything, but toward the end i can hear it :

MY ISLANDS WILL BE RESTORED [slayer-pantheon-popcorn]

Skaarl D Lizard1 votes

Deppressed but reasonable he would understand and

Be commending and respectfull to Friends : Kalista,Yorick

Imposing and judging to Enemies : Hecarim,Mordekaiser,Karthus etc

His most fitting lane would be toplane and a fitting ultimate would be some sort of buff maybe?

One could be : after x seconds or attacks, the ruined kings attack is imbued with x magic

All his abilities need to have the opponent on edge to know that they are fighting a once [and soon to be ] great king

But Hecarim is basically his most loyal knight, wheras Kalista was the one that opposed him,if anything he'd be the opposite of what you described(at least in personality)....

I made something like that. Though his sword is a bit more... grandiose. (It's as tall as a 3-story building)

Honestly I think he'd overlap thematically the most with Mordekaiser. A death knight-like theme is prevalent in both of them as you mentioned. However, after his rework, I think Morde fits more neatly into the Lawful Evil Overlord department with soul-enslaving and tanky, hard hitting abilities. On the other hand, the Ruined King (judging from his weapon in-game and the new, upcoming Mastery skill) is very adept at quick hits, life-steal and apparently has a formidable weapon. Additionally, I think the Ruined King has a nice "Sorrow" thematic going on for him. Demoralizing ghostly minions, deafening, crying souls of people who have suffered just like the King (which in-game could translate into a silence ability) and other Misery-related abilities would make our King quite the unique, misunderstood, chaotic neutral character.

So yeah, I'd put my money on a Lifesteal + Quick Hit + Sorrow type of Death Knight thematic.

GreenLore1 votes

The problem that I see is that as long as Morde remains an undead armored guy using a knight weapon and death magic,he'll fit the thematic of the death knight. And gameplay variations don't really help to make the theme stand out more(otherwise we could get a bunch of Garens with different kit focuses in the future)

However I agree that the sorrowful aspect of the ruined king would at least differentiate him from other undeads in terms of personality, though I'm not sure if it'd be enough to make him stand out thematically.

Well most of the time I feel like Riot will accept overlapping themes as long as there is a differing personality between them. Hence MissFortune and Lucian (dual wield gunners yet one is a pirate the other a ghosthunter) or Maokai and Ivern (sentient, LotR-style treants yet one is ghastly-themed the other has a more straightforward nature/elvish style to him).

Not to mention that virtually all of the Void creatures (maybe with the exception of Velkoz), are basically the same "class" (as in a Monster). It's also hard to discern them personality-wise because most of them seem to lack the intelligence needed to actually have a personality and act more like typical, instinct-driven monstrosities (again, this is where I find Vel'Koz to be unique compared to the rest).

In conclusion, I personally do not think Riot will refrain from making the Ruined King because of Mordekaiser similarities. There are enough differences between them both lore-wise and style-wise and if there is a will, he will be made. However, Riot has expressed in the past their desire to NOT make the Ruined King because that just adds more mystery to him and more flare to the Shadow Isles lore as a whole. A mythical, tragic figure that is only briefly mentioned in old legends. Making him into a champion will familiarize him too much.

GreenLore1 votes

They are certainly ok with similar themes, but even those who have overlapping ones do have their thematic differences(and sometimes these dfiferences even come from the personality).

I mean Miss Fortune is still our only bounty hunter in the whole game, wheras Lucian is more of a gun slinger and our only undead hunter as well.

Similarly Maokai is an actual treant, wheras Ivern is actually closer to a druid(and they represent different kinds of treants as well,Maokai is basically the haunted treant, wheras Ivern is the big forest protector)

And there are several different monster archetypes and each void champion covers a different one,we have Vel'koz, the beholder,Cho'gath, the kaiju,Kog'maw, the monster puppy/larva,Kha'zix,the giant mantis and Rek'sai who is our landshark.

A sorrowful wraith that kills things on touch.

Damn. But thats what the black mist is all about and the ruinedking must feel bad. Maybe he could be a drain tank that sends souls out to continue his pained existence .

if you ask me riot should make him into a knight mage who can corrupt enemy's his powers would come from his sword his ulti should be more like stacks killing minions jungle champs or champions then ulti would release a blast that does damage in a strait line

GreenLore1 votes

But Mordekaiser is already an undead magic using knight. He even corrupts others by enslaving their souls.

I mean.. I'm a few years late but. The Ruined King isn't from the shadow Isles. He came from a different kingdom, long story short The Blessed Isles became The Shadow Isles- Now I'll fly away two years ago summoner 31

GreenLore1 votes

Hecarim was also from a different kingdom, but is now considered a shadow isles champ because he now haunts the shadow isles. The same would also apply to the ruined king.

And overall it doesn't really matter where the king came from or where he currently is, the question would be how he could be differentiated thematically from the other undead.

Sirsir1 votes

Sion is shadow isles? I thought he was a Noxian experiment.

Of course he would synergize with item 3153. He could be another ADC, one that could actually be balanced, unlike the mess that is Kalista.

GreenLore1 votes

I made a mistake, I listed Sion because he is anohter undead champion and forgot that I said "shadow isles" at first.

Also I'm talking about a thematic niche, not a gameplay one, so just being "shadow isles adc, who isn't kalista" isn't really saying anything about his theme.

Skaarl D Lizard3 votes

I already see him with that imposing presence, his appearance being similiar to that of Dark Souls final boss our mighty lord Gwyn http://i.imgur.com/3dXjh.jpg

I'm making an epic lore for The Ruined King. It's going to involve: Mordekaiser Hecarim Kalista Ryze Azir Evelynn Lucian Thresh Nautilus Maokai Yorick Bard

Essentially I'm making his gameplay like a final boss. Telegraphed and sluggish, but powerful in grandiose ways. His lore based on the connection between mana and death and the reason why we are tasked at destroying Nexus shards to win games. Zara's character will be a bit strange though, since the way I formed his lore makes him the only champion who is actually dead--gone from Runeterra.

His form in game literally based on his legendary acts during his second life, much like Heroic Spirits from the Fate series. However, since he is literally a part of the realm in which champions are summoned, he is physically aware of the situation he is placed into in a much deeper level.

Just make him a ripoff of Leoric. The Ruined King is more or less King Leoric

he could be an ad attack speed tank with a passive that shreds tanks like his sworditem 3153 or he could modify himself and other champs with his abilities to increase his skill in battle but i think it would be cool for him to be able to inflict a new status effect called madness on himself or others

TrashwithahardR1 votes

I would want to see him as a rotting amalgamation of death and life, fused with his Queen, both begging for death and for their misery to end, give them a unique joined at the hip design, a rusted sword and the power to control the mist in plumes that drain life energy, they can have life steal autos and an ability that calls upon the wrath of the king's madness to boost attack speed and the queen can take over and use her overwhelming suicidal dread to fear and damage, the ultimate could maybe be based on how close to death they are and be kind of like a reconjuring of the mist. Or get rid of the life steal and make a new disable, dread, which would sap mr. Just some thoughts.
