@Riot Viusal Development. What are your thoughts on Bilgewater's aesthetics?

Hello Rioters! The visual development of League of Legends is one of my big interests and I always get excited when you talk about your work. It'd be very interesting to hear what direction you want to move Bilgewater to aesthetically and your general thoughts about their theme and visuals; who is the best guide for their look right now, who could use some visual work, etc. Also thoughts about the faction's general look, dress, architecture, environments and designs. It'd be wonderful to have a conversation about it!

To start the discussion of, here are some notable elements to summarize for their current look and themes.

  1. Two champions have obvious cues from the age of Caribbean piracy: Gangplank MissFortune. MF has some Baroque elements in addition to that.
  2. Two champions have obvious cues from the Old West: TwistedFate Graves.
  3. One champion, loosely connected to Bilgewater, has few aesthetic cues, except for the obvious: early 18th century diving suits. Nautilus.
  4. Two champions, loosely connected to Bilgewater, has an Atlantis-theme:NamiFizz. Nami, at least, seem to sport some ancient greek/corinthian designs. (Maybe she's more visually connected to Mt. Targons mythology.)
  5. The storyteller's theater in the Tales of the Black Mist: The Harrowing has obvious Baroque aesthetics. It is also in line with Caribbean themes.
  6. Obviously Bilgewater would be somewhat of a hub for the Atlantis-themed champions and such, which is an interesting direction. Also, Serpent Callers sounds interesting! That suggests some cool directions you could go with ocean-themes more closely knit to Bilgewater.
  7. It looks like Bilgewater will be the main bastion against the Shadow Isles in the future, which is an awesome hook. I wonder how ghostbuster-pirates would gear up and dress!
  8. Over all, Bilgewater is the faction with the most potential to bring in American influences. New themes to explore should probably stick with that, but there are many interesting aesthetics to take from there.

Personally, I'd love to see the characters be more visually unified, and maybe incorporate the Old West-influences into the overall look along with the Caribbean direction; Graves especially I'd like to influence further visual development in Bilgewater. Pushing the Baroque a bit further on MissFortune would fit her and make her more distinct. Gangplank could gain from some light texture work to make him more dirty and scruffy, maybe adding a bit more design and layers to his clothing. Nautilus could need some actual design elements on his suit; something to connect him to the Bilgewater area.

Also, some questions if you're willing.

  1. Is there any differentiating between in-faction groups in mind? i.e. is there thoughts about why TwistedFate and Graves are cowboys, Gangplank is a pirate and MissFortune is a Baroque pirate-hunter? Are they representing distinct groups in Bilgewater somehow?
  2. What faction are the dolls in TotBM supposed to represent? Bilgewater-ians? Noxians? Demacians?
  3. What was your thoughts with designs in The Pledge? Any comments on the designs used there?
  4. What other influences would you like to explore and incorporate in the future? Any other American archetypes, maybe?

That's it for now, I hope I'll hear from you!

//Best regards, Solideus.

i hope a rioter picks up on this thread - bilgewater has some of the most potential to be a deep, interesting place for story telling and i'm incredibly partial to the location myself. i'm hoping down the line they will expand on what they have already and create a more diverse history/general story for good ol' bilge!

also am curious as to the tie in between shadow isles and bilgewater myself.
